The Piazza San Pietro Caveoso is a feat of architecture and engineering, situated at the edge of a ravine with a breathtaking view of the abandoned caves where some of the original townsfolk lived. When we visited just before Christmas there were not many crowds so a great time to see this magnificent old city and southern Italy.

This piazza occupies the space in front of the Church of San Pietro Caveoso, on of the major historical attraction in Matera. From the square, you get an excellent and complete view of the facade of the church, as well as the rock to the right of the church that supports the church of Santa maria di IDris, higher up. You can als get a magnificent view of the Sassi from the piazza and, in the distance, of the Cathedral of Matera.

Perfect place to start and if you can, take a guided tour of the church. Learned so much about the people of Sassi from the 1400's. Absolutely fascinating, especially the frescoes.

This is a small square in a unique setting. It's set in front of the St. Peter and Paul Church, beneath the Saint Mary of Idris rock Church, across the Matera Caveano area of earliest cave dwellings and beneath the hill with Matera Cathedral.
So, wherever you look you'll find amazing scenery. For sure you'll make many great pics, just be patient as it's highly popular.

This is the terrace in front of Piazza San Pietro Caveoso. From here you have great views of Matera, the gorge, and the church of Santa Maria de Idris.

Just a few steps away from our hotel, this area is famous for movie productions: Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ", the James Bond movie, "No Time to Die", Angelina Jolie's "Without Blood" due to the unique architecture of buildings built into the mountain and of ancient cave dwellings of long ago. A hiker's dream to explore!
