Gained knowledge about how people lived in this area and could see how disease could spread. Large families with there animals all in a small cave dwelling. I do recommend this short 10 minute historical visit.

The visit was worthwhile because it offers the opportunity to verify how previous people use to leave in these houses with families and animals.
The house been fully decorated as it was in the past.
This visit made clear the very difficult life those citizens had in Sassi up to the 60's.

A room which represents the homes of the past. A detail representation of the family living quarters. Explanation which is taped is in English or any other language that you may require. It’s very well done and the attendant is versed in the history of Matera. It’s worth the 2€ entrance fee.

This is furnished as a replica and is almost certainly way more sanitized than the real thing. Its a useful demonstration of how people lived "back in the day" and worth a visit.

On our apartment owner's recommendation we started the visit of the Sassi with the Casa Noha where we were shown a very interesting 20-minute film on the history of Matera and the Sassi. This really put the place into a context. Then we strolled around in the Sassi and ended up in the Casa Grotta, that was on our to do list. Three tiny spaces, furnished as it used to be. But it's nothing new after the exposition at Casa Noha. Also, it was very annoying with the crowd in such small spaces.

Absolutely fascinating to realise that people actually lived like this. The audio guide was helpful and we had a tour guide as well. The history of this area is remarkable and unbelievable too. A gem.

This is an accurate museum of how people (and their animals) actually lived in these caves. This was one of my favorite museums to visit!

This museum is tiny; our party of six filled the cave so I can only imagine how crowded it could be during prime travel season. That said, for 3 euro you can step back in time and see how the local people lived until relative recent times. In many ways it felt like time had stood still. Definitely worth a brief visit.
