This is the main square in the town of Matera. You can find some nice cafes here and also an excellent viewpoint for photos of Sassi di Matera. We stayed round the corner from here and visited on multiple occasions. The best was the Festival...More

On our first evening in Matera we learned that there was a music festival happening that weekend. We were walking around the piazza and it was packed with Italians, lots of fun and very animated.

A real gathering place for Materians and their families. We were there at dusk; it was fascinating to sit and watch the men/women/children trolling and engrossed in loud/animated conversations. It's right at the main entrance to Sassi.

This is now one of my favorite Italian piazzas, on par with the main piazza in Siena and others. Under a full moon on a soft May night, it was magical!
