About
The Conception Castle is the best starting point to discover the city and acquire an overview of its 3,000 years of history. Located on the hill of the same name, it has served as the enclave to a Roman temple dedicated to Asclepius, a Muslim fortress, a medieval castle or the place where the siren was installed that warned the population of the bombing during the Civil War. Also, from the fortress, one can obtain the best panoramic views of the city and its natural port. Everything within reach thanks to the panoramic lift that saves walking up the hill.

Castle itself with a modern exhibition space didn't make such an impression as the views and the park surrounding it. The lift down to the city is also an interesting experience.

Took the lift up most of the way and got some lovely photos of the town and the sea from there. Afterwards I walked down which brought me to the entrance of the Amphitheatre and museum which I'd recommend.

Cheated. Got the lift up, which takes you 3 quarters of the way up. A series of paths pretty much head to the look out area with panoramic views of the ampitheatre and towards the port.

Then walked up to the castle which had similar if not slightly worse views... inside further AV info and historical info written in English and Spanish.

Yes, a must do.

We dropped in to Cartagena for the day off our boat and chose to climb the hill to this awesome historical site. The views alone were worth the climb and actually learning a little history at the top was very cool. A must do in town.

We walked right up to the top which was well worth doing rather than getting the lift up there. The scenery and views were lovely. It was a highlight of our trip to Cartagena. Would definitely go back again.

We visited the castle partly for the fabulous views it affords of the city, but soon got engrossed in the history of the castle itself. There are beautiful gardens and even wandering peacocks, who seen quite happy to be amongst the tourists! There are a lot of stairs and changes of level so comfortable shoes are recommended. Some areas of the castle are quite dark so caution is required. There was no cafe but cold drinks were available from vending machines. You can choose what level of entry ticket you buy, starting from just the lift to the viewing platform, and tickets were very reasonably priced.
Overall this was very interesting, and a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of the main city.

Without doubt this is the best place to visit in Cartagena. The castle itself is no more than the remains of a tower, but they have crammed in a lot of interesting displays and videos that outline the history of Cartagena and the castle itself.

Most importantly, the castle is now surrounded by very pleasant gardens (el Parque Torres) and there are great views of the city, harbour and surrounding area. So, even if you don’t go into the Castillo, it is worth coming up for the gardens and views.

Firstly, take the panoramic lift. Not only a good view but the best way to get up the hill. Secondly, visit every room. This is a really interesting castle and has the most amazing views of the whole city. Hit a dry and clear day and you have photos for the whole of the region.

Not just a walk around ruin but a great educational facility as well.
For 7 euros you get the castle and the old air raid tunnels, as well as the lift to the top.
