About
The Civil War Shelters Museum is a space for the memory and learning about the recent history of Cartagena, which was a strategic point and primary objective of the bombing of the civil war. Going through some of its galleries and listening to the testimonies of those who took part, it is possible to discover the changes that the struggle brought to their lives and how the passive and active defence of the city was organized. The audio-visual with real images and sounds of the time makes you feel in the first person the dimension and the harshness of the war from inside one of the refuges.

My wife and I visited the Spanish Civil War shelters during a recent 3-night stay in Cartagena. The fee for entering was 5E inclusive, for both of us, which included a reduction for my wife, who has been in a wheelchair for the past few months. Entry was via a cage lift, and once we were inside, everything proved to be accessible. There is a great deal to see, with all sorts of 'hands on' historical activities to attempt. Signage in English as well as Spanish was provided, and there was an interesting short b&w film about Cartagena during the Civil War. We had just been through many of the areas shown in the film, so the glimpses of the city then and now proved to be quite thought provoking. Cartagena was a key Republican stronghold during the fighting, and supplied food and other materials which enabled Madrid to hold out against Franco's Nationalists. We spent a good hour in the shelters, away from the Cartagena June sun, and would thoroughly recommend the shelters as a place to visit for young and old alike.

During the Spanish Civil War, Cartagena remained loyal to the Republic, and became the main naval base. As such it was subjected to heavy bombing by Franco and his fascist allies. The people of Cartagena sheltered in these caves and tunnels carved into the cliff formed when a road was cut through the hill. The museum is quite simple consisting in informative placards and is probably only of interest if you have knowledge or interest in the Spanish Civil War

Access is from the panoramic elevator, first floor. In our desire as Cainites that we are in our country, it is about protection stays from the bombings of the civil war, there are explanations, videos and a projection. It is interesting to know these spaces and that they are not used again. I recommend purchasing joint tickets.

It wasn't in our plans, but it didn't disappoint. We had the chance to show some history to the girls and make it clear that not everything was peaceful and calm, that there were turbulent moments in history that forced people to live underground. A little more history learned, a good complement.

I never write reviews for things like this but I felt like a have a human obligation to tell tourist like myself that this was truly a time waste. I'm always eager to learn new things, specially history. The "tour" takes maybe 3min if you walk slowly and there are a few bombs and some pictures but that's pretty much it. 3,50€/person (dec. 2014) Not worth it at all!

Something different that is not Roman. This museum is housed in what was a massive air-raid shelter used by locals during the Spanish Civil War and represents life as it was with some excellent recollections on video - with English sub-titles - from local people. Also some amazing art in the form of posters used at the time. Not a happy place but very informative and sobering. The entrance is not obvious. Take the lift to the 1st floor and turn left upon exiting.

We visited the museum as we had a very sketchy knowledge of the Spanish civil war, the museum gives you an insight into the suffering of the local people of Cartagena . The information is given via information boards, video accounts and photographs all in Spanish and English. The museum is situated within the original mountain, which has historically provided shelter for Cartagena's residents, and is very well done. There is a panoramic glass lift which you can take to the top of the mountain, discounts are available by combining visits to other museums and there are also discounts for retired people just remember to take your passport.

The Spanish civil war and its aftermath were terrible and I felt this exhibition fell short in the history it presented. Worth a visit because its quite well done but don't expect too much flesh on the bone. But if you don't know about the Civil War a reasonable star.t

The museum in an old shelter is a very interesting place to visit. It pictures what life in Cartagena was like during the Civil war.

Enjoyed my visit to this wonderful museum - it really is in a great space - very atmospheric. However I was left wanting to know much more about the history of the war. I read every exhibit but left thinking that there was so much more that could have been explained about the wider context and not just around Cartagena and the bombings. However it was worth the visit to again hear the speech from the Great Dictator starring Charlie Chaplin - a speech that very much resonates even today. There are also some amazing photographs on exhibit - some of which would be nice to purchase- the one of all the gentleman outside a famous bar / cafe is amazing - such faces and characters. But I would recommend it as a good visit - with some more exhibits and information it could be wonderful. Has a great bookshop as well

Online description for the bathroom states 'kid's step stool' , however I have just asked for one at the Parc reception and sent to Hotel reception. Both have said this is not provided. which is correct?

How much time should one plan on spending at this museum, to get a fairly thorough introduction to the civil war? Is an hour enough?

I think so, unless you want to get into a lot of details.
