Of the many streets streaming off from Puerta de Sol, this is the one that I found most attractive and interesting. It heads up to Gran Via. It is full of restaurants, high street brand outlets, and souvenir shops.

As with any top tourist destination, beware of pick pockets.

We found a small but good and clean place to stay for a night in Madrid over this location .

Close to Cibeles and La Gran Vía with access to public transportation from the airport by Metro or Bus.
Yes, is crowded but is the center of Madrid with a lot of tourists.

Nice restaurants available for all the budget.

Running roughly from Puerto Del Sol to Gran Via ,Calle De La Montera is a street with a bit of a reputation, ok , the fact that it a haunt both day or night for prostitutes practicing the worlds oldest profession but to me it's just a busy shopping street with some nice restaurants and bars along ,the prostitutes here are not bothersome, try going to the big Spanish resorts such as Benidorm, Fuengirola and further afield such as Tenerife were the prostitutes are very aggressive.
I like the street, I like the vibe here ,its edgy in a nice way and in my opinion not a street to be scared of,form your own opinion if your planning a holiday to Madrid.

We came across Calle de la Montera while wandering around Puerta del Sol, which was a few times. The street, as we saw it, is full of shops of all descriptions, including fashion, souvenir, cafes, restaurants and others, and loads of people. It can get very crowded, at least during the daytime hours, when we were there. Probably more crowded in the dark hours. Apparently part of this street has a popular area where prostitution thrives, but we did not really see much evidence of this. The street is a lovely pedestrianised thoroughfare and quite nice to take a stroll on.

Running directly from Sol to Gran Via ,Calle De La Montera is a longish street that to be honest is nothing that special really.
It's basically a shopping street with your usual high street stores such as Vodaphone ,Carrefour and the like and some nice cafes and bars ,we dropped in Cerveceria 100 Montaditos along this street and enjoyed a few Cruzcampo beers which were delicious.
As has been touched on in previous reviews there are prostitute working this street but they are harmless but it's still weird seeing them working the oldest profession in the world.
We used this street as a cut through from Puerta Del Sol to Calle Gran Via, it's an extremely busy and popular street but in my opinion not really a must go tourist destination.

Connection between Gran via and Sol. Tourist souvenirs, Africans selling from the pavement, food and prostitution. Ladies are working all day long on same street where police department is. It is absurd this to happen in the heart of the city.

I walked the part of Calle de la Montera which is a shopping avenue. It is like any other European city's shopping street - many chain stores, fast food, restaurants. Here - it is extremely crowded. Be careful of pickpocketing!

Our hotel was at the corner of Montera and Gran Via so we walked down this street every day that we were in Madrid. There's a lot of restaurants, albeit fast food and tourist traps, street vendors and stores. There's always a tonne of people on this street whether it is late at night or super early morning so it always felt safe. Take note that this also seems to be a red light district so there are ladies "working" all day and all night, but they were never a bother. Just like any other street in Madrid, you have to be vigilant and watchful of your surroundings, but I can't find anything negative to say about the street other than it is crowded and touristy, but hey, I was one of those tourists!

I mostly walk around places near major streets off map, so it was a little surprising to walk down here - a road just off Gran Via. The Gran Via end is good but it quickly becomes edgy with lots of prostitutes and no restaurants etc. to recommend it. The end of it is Sol - also, weirdly rough. Madrid seems to have a relaxed attitude to prostitutes, but it doesn't feel good so close to a major tourist attraction.
