I have stayed in this neighborhood (from the US) every year since 2010. It is quite large: from Anton Martin to Calle Embajadores all the way down the hill. So, there are many Lavapiés in Lavapiés. It is the most politically and socially conscious barrio in town with great bars, coffeehouses, and cool restaurants. I also enjoy hanging out at night: not dangerous. But we have been culturally trained: if there are black or brown people, it must be unsafe (there is plenty of white people as well). I have never had any problems at all

Historical neighborhood of Madrid that in recent years has been improving little by little, yet it is still quite degraded, I hope it happens like Chueca. Today I wouldn't go alone depending on what time. During the day there is a lot of hustle and bustle, you have to do a little research, there are good places to have a drink and cuisine from all over the world.

I regularly visit Madrid, until recently I stopped by Malasaña where I had my bars that were closing one by one; El Palentino, Sidi, etc. and the neighborhood became impersonal, my acquaintances started moving because they couldn't stand the hipster scene anymore. who were subjected
Now I turn to Lavapies, where I smell the neighborhood and never change places in Madrid again.

Tourists are fair game here. If you want to experience muggers, pickpockets and tricksters first hand then go for it. It took them seconds to spot me walk into the Plaza... and over they came, about 5 Africans, in broad daylight, and not a policeman in sight. I can walk pretty fast and got away with it, but others may not.

BTW it didn't spoil my time in Madrid, and it was really the only crime I saw while there.

I love Lavapies, it's my favourite barrio in Madrid, BUT I seriously wouldn't recommend it for a visitor to the city, it's scruffy and dangerous...
There are some great restaurants and night spots, it's the most multi-cutural area in Madrid and frankly there's lots to see, but you need to be prepared for anything when you go there. Lavapies has an intimidating ambiance; dark, narrow streets and lurking gangs it's almost Dickensian in some respects and tourists are not welcomed.
If you go there leave your camera at the hotel, avoid carrying a map or other obvious "tourist" stuff, make sure your valuables are well stashed. It really is worth visiting if you're a courageous sort, but you really must try to blend in, try to look relaxed and "at home" and BE CAREFUL...

There is absolutely no reason come here ever, unless you want Indian Food or bulk pack cheap socks. I don’t understand why people rave about this location. It is dead, grungy, and a bunch of shops that sell useless trinkets that all carry the same inventory. Based on he review I thought it would be something artsy, it’s just a neighborhood with nothing to offer. I don’t recommend this place. It was a waste of time.

This is a very sketchy area in Madrid, drugs, prostitution... It was a very popular neighborhood in Madrid in the 19th century; poor people used to live here. Nowadays, it is a dangerous neighborhood. The bars are nice, but I do not recommend it at night.

People live And die here, warts and all. A working, breathing, sweating area home to many immigrants and in the evening police going about their business of frisking young men. Not threatening, tho.

Situated in a handy place for the metro, with several little bars and cafes about, but some very dodgy people in the area. Mainly drug dealers who are constantly hanging around the square and don't even try to hide their drug dealing activities!
Not to be recommended, especially for female travelers!

Certainly a neighborhood in transition; I looked at some apartments for sale here and they cost 60,000 euro to 600,000 euro. Truth told, I stayed in that neighborhood for six nights, and had no issues at all. What I did experience was a great neighborhood vibe on a summer's eve, with people of many nationalities at sidewalk tables sipping wine, and eating. I don't speak a word of Spanish, and was treated warmly in little bars and restaurants. Every nibble concluded with a free shot of some kind of booze; sometimes two. As there is transition there, sure, one can see some scruff. Truthfully, I encountered more sleaze in Puerto del Sol. In Paris, tourists are always asking about places to visit where there aren't too many tourists ( there is no such thing ). If Lavapies were in Paris, I'd suggest they visit here. Soon, it will be another part of Madrid's tourist central. Visit it now, and in a few years you can tell everyone, I was in Lavapies when..."
