- Neil KLiverpool, United Kingdom8,29,522 contributionsAnother beautiful churchI love the architecture in Madrid ,it's an amazing city ,some of the most beautiful buildings in this most gorgeous of city's are the churches ,one in love to view is Church Of San Isidro. Construction of the church begun in 1622 under the guidance of Pedro Sanchez until his demise in 1633 ,the church was completed by architect's Francisco Bautista and Melchor De Bueras in 1664 although the church was consecrated in 1651,dedicated to St Francis Xavier ,one of the most distinguished Jesuits but with the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767 it was rededicated to Saint Isadore in 1769 ,the church actually holds the remains of Isadore The Laborer ,Patron Saint of Madrid. During the Spanish Civil War the church was damaged by fire in 1936 with many works of art lost ,the dome collapsed also but under the guidance of architect Javier Barroso the church was restored to it's former glory. It's a wonderful and historic church that's most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area and easy to locate along Calle De Toledo.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 2 October 2023
- Quill2005Ocala, Florida266 contributionsMadrid’s Patron Saint is Buried Here, Nice ChurchIn the heart of Madrid, very near to the Plaza Mayor. Built in the 17th century, this beautiful Baroque church contains the mortal remains of the patron saint of Madrid, St. Isidor the farmer, and his wife. Ornate decorations are found throughout the interior. If you’re visiting the Plaza Mayor, take a few minutes to walk to this church and see this Baroque edifice. Bear in mind siesta hours when it comes to access to the church. It’s open 7:30am-2pm (1pm in summer) and then again 7pm-9pm.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 April 2024

The Basilica of San Isidro was used as the cathedral of Madrid from 1885 until the Almudena Cathedral was completed. The Jesuit architect Pedro Sanchez designed the church as a twin-towered Baroque church. Later another Jesuit architect, Francisco Bautista built it in the 17th century. The Jesuits built it using money left to them by the sister of Felipe II, Doña Maria, Empress of Austria. For that reason, the church has a wrought iron gate that has a two-headed eagle, the symbol of the dynasty of the House of Austria. The interior decoration of the church was done by Ventura Rodriguez in the mid 18th century. The church has a Latin cross plan and a dome supported by a tambour with eight windows, covered with slate and lead. The church was completely destroyed by a fire in 1936 and had to be rebuilt. There is a niche at the center of the church with images of the patrons of the city, San Isidro and his wife Santa Maria de la Cabeza. Their remains are found in twin urns on the main altar.
The church has important images of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad and the Santísima Virgen de la Almudena. There are several side chapels that are very beautiful. On the Thursday of Easter week, the two images of the patron saints are taken out in a procession around the streets of the city.

This church used to be the cathedral of Madrid, before the cathedral of Almudena was erected. The temple is beautiful! Also the patron of Madrid, Saint Isidore and his wife are buried in this cathedral. It is a typical Baroque style church with a tall dome and beautiful sculptures.

Madrid is justifiably famous for its innumerable and beautiful churches and Church Of San Isidro is just one of many we admired in this most beautiful of city's.
A beautiful church constructed in the Baroque style of architecture that is so pleasing on the eye it's also known as the Collegiate Church Of San Isidro and holds the remains of the patron saint of Madrid, Isadore The Laborer.
The design of the church was by Pedro Sánchez, under his guidance construction commenced in 1622 until his death 1633 ,the church was completed by Francisco Bautista and Melchor De Bueras by 1664 ,the church was actually consecrated in 1651 which was 13 years before it completion and dedicated to St Francis Xavier one of the most distinguished Jesuits but with the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767 it was dedicated to Saint Isadore in 1769 .
The church was damaged by fire at the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 ,many works of art were lost in the raging fire ,the impressive done also collapsed but under the guidance of architect Javier Barroso the church was painstakingly restored to its former glory.
This is an active church, not in a major tourist area but that said I love visiting the La Latina neighbourhood, full of pubs, bars and restaurants and some amazing architecture such as this church.
Church Of San Isadore is easy to locate along Calle De Toledo, most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area.

This place is defenitely worth making a trip! It smells with history. The architecture, the icons... But, leave it to Europeans to remind you who's in charge! We got kicked out, because the church was going to be closed for a nite! Welcome to Madrid! )))

Lovely church to the patron saint of Madrid. The brown of the pews is soft and warm making the church a welcoming and embracing environment for worship. Worth sitting there for a while and breating in the calm.

During a wander through the smaller streets of Madrid, we discovered the lovely Church of San Isidro. There were few people so we assumed not many tourists knew of it. This church contains the remains of San Isidro, the patron saint of Madrid. We found beautiful wood carvings and artwork, many side chapels, and it was a very warm and serene atmosphere. A nice discovery that we'd like to share.
