I was lucky enough to have a hotel in the Chueca District (Madrid House Hotel - see my review of that hotel which is worth staying at). This is a vibrant gay district of the city with a range of restaurants coffee shops and bars. The bars are wide ranging in tastes and interests so whatever takes your fancy there... More

Always drop into Cheuca when in Madrid for different kind of culture and food experience. The bars are cheaper on the whole from Gran Via / Sol areas and more friendly. Don't miss the bar on top of the market.

It was unexpectedly beautiful right at the center of Madrid. It's bars, clubs and restaurants are all staffed with hot Spanish guys. This is gay heaven! Thank you Gay God!

We felt very safe, even late nights after 10PM. Plenty of Christmas lights shine the way in December. There's many night clubs that open up till 3AM and the crowds afterwards that usually disperse after 5AM - they truly know how to party. Do know that if you are staying in the Chueca district next to the sub station, it... More

Good location just off Gran Via as a base to get to main sights in the city. Wide range of restaurants & the area is popular with tourists and families.

Was at Chueca District for San Anton Market, most of the shops were not opened yet when I was there in the morning.

This district is gay-integrated more than it is a gay ghetto - reflecting Spanish society. The district is full of shopping, bars, restaurants, ice cream bars... Enjoy the plaza around the Chueca metro station where all kinds of folk congregate to enjoy the sun, puppies, and each other. Treat yourself to an ice cream too.

I stayed at an AirBnB place and the street was easy to find and it was just off the main strip. There were tons of bars, restaurants, cafes, shops and theatres. On Sunday, part of the street was closed off and children played and people walked dogs. The Metro was easy to use to city center and back. I am... More

This area is more than a cliche than something else. Indeed you can find gay bars, restaurants and hotels, but most are filled with tourist. If you want to find the true local gay people, you need to go somewhere else.

Staying in Chueca

Neighbourhood Profile
Chueca
Chueca is the hip, gay neighbourhood of Madrid where many of the streets are narrow and intimate, but where the hustle and bustle and the eclectic storefronts and people give it a distinctly urban feel. The main thoroughfare is Calle Hortaleza and the main square is Plaza Chueca, completely filled with terraza tables serving copas (mixed drinks) during summer. A mixture of trendy and grungy, some of the adult businesses here are explicitly racy in their signage. From the rainbow flags to the signs above the entrances of its many funky bars, to the date spot restaurants, Chueca is a vibrant and colorful place. It's always interesting to explore the different corners of Chueca by day, and by night, the area becomes a major nightlife destination when the clubs open their doors.
