Neighbourhood: Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighbourhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighbourhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.

Lovely museum in the house of Lope de Vega, famous Spanish playwright in the 1600's. Well taken care of with a beautiful garden that is open to visitors. If you wish to tour the house, reservations must be made in advance, either with email or phone call. Tours are no charge. Our guide was so knowledgeable - a delightful tour!

Loved this place. We booked a tour of the house which is well worth seeing. Only 35 minutes and very informative. Great to see a building set out as it would have been in 1610, so interesting. Our guide Gema was excellent. Well worth a visit but definitely book or you cannot do the tour.

Incredible visit! We learned a lot from Lope de Vega, thanks to the excellent guide Gema and the passionate way to explained his life, works, family, success and fame. The house is very well decorated representing a true 17th century home, I recommend writing an email to reserve the tickets beforehand, they answer quickly. There are also tours in English upon request.

Amazing experience! Check online so you don´t miss it out. Free admittance but you come out ith valuable information of the times and advantures of prolific playriter Lope de Vega. I wish you can have as a guide Mrs Gemma, very educational, learned on the matter and with lots of jab-dropping anecdotes to share! A visit worth repeating!

Having read many of Lope's plays we really wanted to visit his house. Unfortunately we didn't plan it well in advance and even though it was a weekday off-season they had a long list of reservations (they didn't pick up phone). Trying to join a tour on the spot (in case someone canceled) didn't work and the staff was more police-like rather than welcoming. So we only saw the orange garden which is, well , an orange garden with a view on a brick wall, nothing special about it.

Such an interesting experience! I must say, I had never heard about Lope de Vega before but my friend suggested that we visited this museum and booked an English tour for us, for free! And the guide did a great job and I could understand more about this author and his life despite never having read anything written by him. Especially his story about being a priest was interesting. Also the garden with the orange trees is a must. It was a nice visit. I recommend it if you are for a longer stay in Madrid.

How the other half lived a couple of centuries ago. Fascinating tour of this intimate museum, home of Lope de Vega. A law that influenced the style of architecture billeted officers with families in Madrid for life if they had a top floor. Those with the space had a lodger. Those who managed to disguise the fact from the street escaped.

We checked in to reserve an English tour the day we arrived but all those tours were full for the time we would be in Madrid. Our other option was to take the tour in Spanish and that started in 10 minutes. Since it was a free tour, we felt we had nothing to lose, so, that is what we did. We can understand some Spanish and our tour guide spoke very clearly. We did miss some of the anecdotes that she told but we were able to see the spaces and artifacts. It is amazing that the house is still here and in such good condition.

Fascinating when you realise the time in which he lived, his family life and what was going on in the literary world.

My hotel was in the same street as this museum and I popped in and booked on a tour the following day, was no problem. The tour takes you around this 16th century house and tells you about the life of Lope de Vega and how he used the house. It is really very interesting and also to see the Moorish influence on the day to day life. I highly recommend this 30 minute tour which ends up in the garden of the house - I am surprised there is no charge.
