Like other travellers we saw this in the Lonely Planet guide and it sounded like fun. We found it easily enough in the market and at 30 euros we thought we must be in for a treat. The 6 sherries are presented in a cumbersome brass holder. You are then given an audio guide which is supposed to tell you... More

Found this place mentioned in the Madrid Lonely Planet guide - I wouldn't have spotted it otherwise, as it's tiny and easy to miss in the very crowded Mercato de San Miguel. For €25 (download a voucher for €5 off from the website) you get six generous samples of different sherries and six vouchers to get tapas from various stalls... More

The sherries were OK. These 6 sherries were each paired with different tapas which were tastes of cheese or nuts or fish etc. However several of them were somewhat repetitive so you found yourself returning to the same counter several times. It was kind of a fun experience but the sherries were not very good and the tapas fair. The... More

One of the neat stalls at Mercado San Miguel is the Sherry Corner where you can sample a variety of barrelled sherry drinks (€2.50 per) before, after or while enjoying various tapas and other foods available within the market. I had the Moscatel which was a golden colour, slightly fruity and very sweet, made for a nice drink after a... More

Highly recommend the Sherry tasting experience at the Mercado de San Miguel. I am not usually a drinker of sherry but do enjoy food and wine in general. This experience involved a stand with 6 different sherries to taste. With each you get a voucher that gives you a choice of tapas that will compliment the sherry - you collect... More

Large selection of different sherries. We chose an Oloroso and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a very busy national holiday and although extremely busy the staff were efficient and friendly

We know our sherries and when we came across The Sherry Corner, we thought we would re-live our Jerez holiday. What a disappointment! The Ammontillado was past its sell-by date, or otherwise it was pretty inferior stuff. So, we stopped after one drink and didn't continue. More's the pity as I hadn't tasted good Pedro Ximenez for years and was... More

Dear CarolCSC, First of all, thank you for your feedback. We are very sorry to hear that our audioguided sherry taste did not meet your expectationes, since we only serve quality products. In case of the Amontillado we serve “Viña AB” from Gonzalez Byass, one of the most well known and high quality sherry wine producers in Spain. What is... More

€15 for a flight of sherry is a nice introduction, at a reasonable price. Allows the comparison and contrast of this particular beverage. They also serve other things as well, such as sangria and other concoctions with sherry in. Be warned: although it says sherry "corner", it isn't in the corner of the market.

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
