I participated a free tour with the guide Enrique. The tour was so interesting purely because of his excellent communication and presentation skills. I have seen many tour guides in many locations. But he was the best I met so far.

Enrique was such a wonderful guide. He was informative, communicative and very entertaining. Not only did he know so much about Madrid's history and current culture, he also gave us tips for Granada. I've been on several free walking tours in many big cities and this was one of the best. The only tip I have: With a small group... More

We have done many walking tours in various cities around the world and this was one of the better ones. Our guide (I forgot his name) was superb. His English was perfect as he had lived in Los Angeles for a few years. He brought the tour to life did a great job of explaining in detail all of the... More

We jouned the tour for only half an hour. Then we left the group, as it was a waste of time! The guide told us something about the history or about a sign and at the end he almost always advertised a charged tour, where we can learn more.

Sebastian talked fast. He almost non stop from the very beginning in plaza mayor. He was energetic and enthusiastic about history of Spain. In his words, the kings, the queens, the princes and princesses, the allies, the foes, the Christians, the Muslims, the Jews were all brought to their life. Palaces were no more still buildings. Instead, they became the... More

I was on a tour with Javon, and it was a really good. I wouldnt have been able to see all these things in such a short time on my own, and the way he told us about the city was interesting and with obvious passion, not just handing out cold information. I cant come up with anything to make... More

Ok it's free so that's a big plus and makes it good value! Fabrizio was a very knowledgeable and passionate guide. The tour was based very much in the city centre, the walking was short and there were no inclines. Don't be put off by the walking aspect. I would have preferred more walking and less talking; it went into... More

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
