One of the most significantly historic square's in Madrid is Plaza Del Dos De Mayo .
Located in the heart of the vibrant Malasana district the square is dominated by the statue in honour of Luis Daoiz and Pedro Velarde who were the first two soldiers killed in the May 2nd ,1808 uprising against the French ,the impressive monument to this event in the square is so photogenic ,the square itself looks a bit shoddy ,graffiti is not my thing but the cafe's and bars around thos square are superb and it gets busy ,we hit a few bars here ,enjoyed cooling beers as the temperatures hit 107 degrees Fahrenheit, if you're in the Malasana district its a square to most definitely check out.

The Plaza del Dos de Mayo remains a very nice square in the heart of the attractive Malasaña district with restaurants and bars all around it, a couple of playgrounds and the monument to the heroes of 2nd of May, 1808 uprising against the Napoleonic troops. There used to be a bookshop and various other small shops on the square but they have all disappeared and been turned into restaurants and bars. The downside to its popularity is that it fills up very quickly with people with all the related inconveniences: waiting in line to get a table, noise, the smell of pee in the corners due to lack of public toilets etc.

The walk from Piazza Espana at one point was not pleasant and made us feel insecure.
The whole area is full of graffiti and reminds us of Harlem in the USA.
The center itself is not particularly impressive and we even witnessed a gang and police fight, in conclusion, it is better not to come here

This is a very important historical square in Madrid. It was the centre of the uprising of Spaniards against the Napoleonic invasion in 1808. Many innocent Spaniards were shot at this spot fighting for the sovereignty and freedom. Goya painted these scenes in his famous paintings.

Was in this neighborhood shopping for a leather bag for my wife. Lots of locals eating lunch and just hanging out. Interesting statue. Blue sky day. Check out the fellow feeding the pigeons.

Although not one of Madrid's most beautiful squares Plaza Del Dos De Mayo is certainly one of it's most historic.
It's not a big square ,named in honour of Luis Daoíz and Pedro Velarde ,the first two soldiers killed in the 1808 uprising against the French that sparked the Spanish War Of Independence, the fantastic and animated monument is the centrepiece of this square ,we visited of a Sunday night, bars ,pubs and restaurants were packed ,we visited a few bars here, sat outside with cold beers soaking up the great atmosphere, it's most definitely a family friendly area, lots of kids playing in the playground area while their parents looked on .
A wonderful square, most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area.

Plaza del Dos de Mayo is not a huge area, but it has a few cafes, restaurants, bars, and other shops around it and in the vicinity. During the day time it is rather quiet, but we do not know what the nightlife is like here as we have not been around this area at night. The plaza's history is inextricably linked to the history of Spain itself. It was here, at this plaza, back in 1808, that the Spanish War of Independence, had its beginnings. On the 2nd May, 1808, the first victims, two soldiers, lost their lives when a war started against the invading French army of Napoleon Bonaparte. Previously the two countries had been allies and had in fact attacked Portugal together, in 1807! However things turned nasty in 1808 when Napoleon got a bit greedy and Spain and France turned on each other.

The route we followed through quite narrow streets meant that the large open expanse of Plaza 2 de Mayo came as a surprise.Certainly a busy and quite impressive place on Saturday afternoon.

This plaza and so many of the streets surrounding it are just fantastic to party at night.
After midnight the plaza and Malasaña are crazy busy.
Especially on the weekend.
Definately more geared to a younger crowd.
If you want to get a taste of why Spaniards are famous for partying harder and louder than any other nationality.
You can't miss this incredibly lively barrio.
