About
Back in 1916, San Miguel started as a wholesale food market. Today, this covered gourmet market’s drawcard is some of Spain’s finest produce and regional specialties. You'll find it nestled in the city center, clad in cast-iron architecture—it's also the last remaining iron market hall in Madrid. The market’s fleet comprises traditional tapas bars, seafood stalls, artisan bakeries, quality butchers, and an array of booths selling other fresh ingredients. It gets busy during lunch hour, so arrive early.
Walk over from the famed Plaza Mayor, or make a pit stop after touring the Royal Palace of Madrid and the adjacent Plaza de la Armería.

Top ways to experience Mercado San Miguel
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

- EmilyAlcorn5London, United Kingdom83 contributionsMust visit food stopThis place is a must visit when in Madrid, it is exciting and buzzing with lots of great food. It is a great location to sample Spanish delicacies with wine and socialise. There is limited seating so I wouldn't recommend going with kids as it can get very crowded. To avoid busy periods, and if time allows, go on a Sunday evening.Visited November 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 December 2022
- minnesotans4Saint Paul, Minnesota2,801 contributionsMadrid highlightWhenever we are in Madrid, the Mercado is always high on our list. The iberico ham from pigs fed acorns was more expensive but well worth the price. We sampled a variety of sangrias throughout Madrid and their sangria was our favorite. It is just fun to sample the local cuisine.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 30 December 2022
- Mikael FHelsinki, Finland30,625 contributionsCrowded gastronomic templeThis impressive historic market located in the square of the same name next to the Plaza Mayor has the original iron structure from the early 20th century. It has more than 10 million visitors a year. It is always very crowded and it is hard to find a spot to enjoy the delicious-looking items on sale.Visited December 2022Written 2 January 2023
- QuakesNewYork239 contributionsNice but Touristy and Food Quite PedestrianIt's a beautifully re-done mercado and conveniently located in the central Plaza Mayor area. The stalls are mostly operated by corporate joints rather than more traditional mom-and-pop owners at other mercados. It's not quite McDonald's but it also doesn't feel truly authentic. Pricing also is at a premium. The food is decent but nothing outstanding compared to other places within walking distance. But it's convenient and not a bad place to go if time is limited or as an introduction.Visited December 2022Written 8 January 2023
- miufvPerth, Australia253 contributionsVery touristy and not many gluten-free optionsThe place is very touristy and pricey, but the food it's still good. Not many gluten-free options on tapas, but the paella and tortilla will do and are yummie. If you don't want to spend too much looking for food in Madrid this is an option. There nowhere to sit though.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 January 2023
- espejo25Concord, California107 contributionsGood but not a top placeDecided to give it a try with our two young sons for a small meal and some drinks. A lot of different food vendors in a small space, pretty crowded midday during the week. Food was okay and drinks good but prices seemed expensive and not a lot of places to sit. It was a good experience but wouldn’t be on my top places to go if I went back to Madrid.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 January 2023
- DAROHATHCairns, Australia636 contributionsFood looked better than it tastedThe Markets are great and certainly worth a visit. They do get very busy though and it’s difficult trying to find somewhere to sit. However, the food looked amazing and we tried multiple tapas, but they looked better than they tasted. Nothing was bad, it was just style over substance. The food is expensive by comparison too.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 January 2023
- mongleeSingapore, Singapore9 contributionsA feast for the eyesThe Mercado San Miguel which is smack in the centre of Madrid in the old part of town is a must visit place for foodies. The market (which is actually more like a food galleria) is teeming with cuisine from all regions of Spain and more. The colors and display of what is available from plant based foods to fresh seafood and meats are a feast for the eyes. There is also wine, cocktails and all manner of drinks. The place is chock a block with tourists sampling the food and drinks and most of the food is a little pricey, considering its all self service and the tables are limited in numbers. Having said that, if you are in Madrid and never been there, its worth a visit.Visited November 2022Written 8 February 2023
- nishan22_77New York City, New York153 contributionsFun Experience to go OnceFun experience, but not sure the best food in Madrid. As other reviewers have noted, this is a feast for the eyes - great selection of different bites, and decent food quality, but portions are generally small and prices are significant premium . It was completely packed with tourists, few locals, which is usually never a good sign. That said, I would recommend going once for the experienceVisited December 2022Written 17 February 2023

The essence of Spain and the World......an hour or four here is just amazing. We had heard lots of negatives about pricing and yes there are some stall where the dishes might seem over priced but compare it with say Borough Market in London and you're looking at a wider world of experience and much better pricing.... you just couldn't keep us away

My wife and I visited the Mercado San Miguel during a trip to Madrid this past spring. It has nice wrought iron work from its origin in 1916. It is covered and contains numerous booths selling tapas, wine, bakery items and other gourmet foods. It is very busy, especially around lunchtime, and gets overcrowded with people wanting a quick bite. We just strolled through but didn’t stop to eat anything because of the large crowd.

Interesting to see, maybe grab a beer or a glass of wine. But WAY crowded and overpriced. Small finger food portions to an exorbitant price.

This Mercado is much smaller and less diverse than the Boqueria in Barcelona. The stalls feels like they're selling the same thing but just in different spots. The place is OVERCROWDED. I can't imagine what it's like during the pandemic! No place to sit! Anyways, love the fruit stands and tapas here and there. But really some are overpriced and chaotic place overall.

Visited on a Saturday and it was super busy, limited seating but such a good atmosphere. Great place to spend an afternoon out of the rain. Numerous food and drink choices. Friends and I played tapas and wine roulette which was a great way to shelter from the rain!

This place is next to Plaza Mayor. It is real crowded and very expensive. I suspect it caters mostly to the tourist crowd.

Great options of food and drinks. Being English had a chicken pastry Cornish pastie, crispy pork belly (personal best). And some bbq rib tapas. Downed with a some sangria.
Busy around 10PM, but very interesting watching everyone having such varied options of eating

Saw lots of food options but it’s quite the overpriced tourist trap. Churros cost 4 euros for five pieces and this is without chocolate sauce. Basically all foods here would cost 1-1.50 euros more than similar equivalents elsewhere.

This is one of my favorite places in Madrid and that is saying a lot in a city full of wonderful sites. Here there is something for everyone from cod tapas to crispy chicharron. We had great acorn jamon, jamon croquettes and tintos de verano. All this under a beautiful building.
