What a stunning cathedral. It's great to see all the pilgrims. Interestingly I am still not 100% convinced that this is st James' final resting place but it certainly makes a great story and is the only reason this city is in the map.

Watching and following the pilgrims with the shells on their backs stating where they have visited along the way and Compostila was the last Cathedral to visit. After that there is a long walk but most of the pilgrims don't do this walk. The Cathedral is set in a large square and is very impressive upon entering the vicinity. Similar... More

After walking part of the Camino in northern Spain we arrived in the square at the front of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Although not religious, we attended the pilgrim's mass which starts at 12pm each day. If you arrive in Santiago de Compostela do not miss this amazing event. It is the culmination of the Camino walk. The... More

It's very fussy, baroque style, and like most of the city a little overdone for my taste. Give me a grand gothic cathedral like Leon over this any day. Still it's well worth a visit.

The history and amount of effort to create such a wonderful building is amazing. Even if you are not religious this cathedral must move you.

Impresive main facade, still it needs some cleaning and maintenance. The interior is also beautiful, but sometimes crowded. Try to visit it very early in the morning.

The cathedral and the square are truly impressive. Though by the time we reached Santiago we were suffering from 'cathedralitis', having seen those in Pamplona, Logrono, Burgos, Leon, and numerous other places along the way. The building is of course huge and the main altar is a sight to behold, but I must confess to preferring Burgos for magnificence. But... More

There is something very rare about this Cathedral. The ornamentation is so profuse that unwillingly reminds you an ancient Angkor Wat temple or Hindu religious building. I know it sounds sacrilegious but, I found magnificent that cultures from different parts of the world have similarities when expressing their religious sentiments. Although, I do not believe in the Santiago story, I... More
