Stunningly beautiful basilica situated in the most breathtaking scenery. Worth every single penny and would definitely go again, Everything from the train trip up the mountain to the cleanliness of all areas was exemplary

We spent 2-3 hours walking around and went to the Basilica, which was beautiful. The entire community felt very special, and was my favourite part of our trip to Barcelona.

Montserrat is worth your time to visit. The Basilica is the focal point, but the reason to visit is to see the countryside and views outside of Barcelona.

You may want to pack a meal to enjoy during the trip - pastries, sandwitches, fruit and water, were our supplies.

To start, do NOT buy tickets on-line, or tours from the vendor desks, in the train station departing from Barcelona. Go right up to the ticket machines in front of the train turnstiles and ask for help from an OFFICIAL attendant - not the vendor helpers or scammers who dress as though they are public employees.

Buy the train fare to Montserrat plus the train (or funicular) that takes you up and down from the local train station to the top of the mountain. The short train ride/funicular up the mountain is a separate ticket which should be bought at the same time.

Enjoy the pleasant 1+ hour trip to the Montserrat train station (note that the funicular and the train to the Montserrat peak have different train stops. Be sure to get off at the right one for you.

The trip up the hill is enjoyable. When at the top, check the schedule for the departing time back down the hill so that you can budget your time and connect to the best train for your trip from the church back to Barcelona.

You should probably start with the basilica and adjacent builings - they are up a short/steep incline across from the train station. There are extra fees involved, and some of the more interesting sights were closed when we were there, so be sure to ask at the door. The basilica is not an ancient building, so in many wants was disappointing after visiting elaborately designed and decorated churches in Barcelona.

There are street vendors along the road to the observation points and restaurants at the church. We found the vendors' prices for snacks and cheeses quite reasonable, and purchased a few items for our trip back. We did not sample the buffet restaurant, but all pricing at Montserrat was reasonable compared to other tourist traps.

We went for the views - the train trip countryside and sights during the mountain climb were excellent. There are many vantage points around the church, and hiking trails with many more observation points all around.

Although famous for the basilica, and you should see it, it is the entire experience which was the draw.

The Basilica itself is exceptionally beautiful and not to be missed. It has a huge ceiling, huge interior and a fantastic altar where you can see the Black Madonna high up behind it in the background. The altar is adorned with numerous paintings, lots of beautiful gold leaf and a superb dome directly above.

Seemingly as with everything else in Barcelona, they have started charging visitors to Montserrat. Despite researching it extensively before coming, we were shocked to find on arrival (after paying almost $100 AUD for train and cable car tickets) that you also have to pay to enter the basilica, to see the any important sites, and for the boys choir. All info online will still suggest these are free. How ridiculous to essentially trap people once they’re up there. A small fee might be fine, but it is about $30 just to go in the basilica.

We are not Catholic but enjoyed seeing one of the Monks conducting services in the Cathedral while tourists were respectfully coming and going. This was the only Monk we saw at Montserrat.

A beautiful place devoted to God, it is easy to comprehend why it conjures such reverence in many, believers or not.

From the Black Madonna location tremendous vistas of the superb Basilica can be seen, a lovely harbinger to stepping within and seeing it in its full glory.

A façade that is wonderful with its array of sculptured saints and deep azure Rose Window, has elements of a number of styles, reflecting the impressive longevity.

This is about an hour from Barcelona, but truly a world apart. The scenery and surrounding mountains are spectacular. The cathedral itself is special and becomes even more so when viewing the Black Virgin.
We arrived before 1:00pm as that is when the world famous Boys Choir performs.
A great experience!!

Such a beautiful cathedral! Lots to see, so much detail. The scale of the place is stunning. Plus the location and views are beautiful. Bit of a queue to see the Madonna so we gave it a miss but something else to see if you don't mind a wait.
