You could easily miss this small statue at end of La Rambla near the Cathedral. This is a replica and they removed the stairs that were once there during Covid.

Legend has it that kissing the climbing lioness brings the good fortune of returning to the city or even better, never leaving it in the first place.

With the limestone original dating from the 12th century now housed in a museum, this is a charming replica.

One of the most famous attractions is the Lioness of Girona. This sculpture dates from the 12th century. It is considered a good omen to kiss her if you reach out.

La Lleona is a typical spot to visit where the tradition was to kiss the behind of the lion in the hope to revisit Girona. Due to the pandemic the small steps were removed and there is a lovely sign next to it about the kissing.

One of the whimsical sites I visited during my time in Girona was the iconic statue named El Cul de la Lleona which dates back to the 12th Century. The statue portrays a lioness climbing a pole. During my visit, I learned it is believed that if a visitor to Girona climbs the steps leading up to the statue and kiss the lioness’ bottom, they will be certain to return to Girona one day. I didn’t kiss the lioness, but certainly hope to return to Girona one day!

With friends, with family and kids and youth, Try to go, and kiss the rear of the statue of the lioness, which predicts your return to Girona. Two minutes walk from the cathedral to the river. A nice story to share

Nothing more that I can say that hasn’t already been said. If you are already going to the old town then you should walk by this for funsies. There are approx six steps to walk up before you reach the lion’s bum. It doesn’t get busy around there either because it’s such a quick photo op.

If you ever find yourself walking down Placa Sant Felix and happen to pass L'hostal de la Lleona, take a moment to look for stone column with a sculpture of a decorative lion, that looks like it’s climbing up. Kiss that lion's behind cause it might just save your life. No … just kidding. This is another one of those rub/kiss a sculpture thing that supposedly brings good luck. Go ahead if you believe in that kind of thing.

There's also a plaque near the lion describing I think the origin of this superstition (in Spanish).
