- permia40,639 contributionsProgresses from Neolithic to ContemporaryHoused in the tremendous Palau de Mar from the 1890s it gives a sweeping fascinating history of the eventful region. Beginning in the far distant Neolithic era with cave paintings and stone and bone tools, it progresses through the millennia to the contemporary. With artefacts, models, dioramas and copious legends, an absorbing journey through the civilisations takes place. The ebb and flow of economic wealth is covered. From empires across the sea to industrialisation and the key powerhouse of textiles in more recent centuries, all is conveyed engagingly. Origins of the Catalonian Coat of Arms are speculated upon. One such concerns Guifre el Pelos dating from the 16th century. It goes that the French King dipped his fingers in Guifre’s blood and moved his fingers down the golden shield, thus creating four bars. Twentieth century turbulence and conflicts are shown. Through the terrible years of the Civil War and subsequent repression till the mid 1970s.Visited February 2023Written 19 March 2023
- Stephanie M15 contributionsWell worth a visit with accessible and interactive displaysGreat museum in a really nice location of Barcelona. We stumbled across this on our afternoon walk from our hop on hop off bus and with our discount from the tour bus it was only 4.80 euros per person. It has amazing displays in multiple languages and was accessible to all! It was surprisingly quiet which was very pleasant and there were so many different things to look atVisited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 August 2023
- Stephen BHeywood, United Kingdom174 contributionsNice change from the usual attractions in Barcelona, informative, well set outStaff really friendly and helpful. €6 to get in. Bargain. Nice and warm. Two levels when we visited. From prehistoric artefacts through eventually to modern times. Covered the history of the Catalan region as you'd expect but like some others who commented, did feel the effects of the brutal civil war were a little played down. Finished by having a drink in the rooftop restaurant. Again, the staff were so friendly and made us feel very welcome. Drinks overlooking the yachts in the harbour. Delightful. Displays had English explanations but the individual displays did not. Easy enough to follow what it was all about though. Great staff. Lovely building. Well planned display. Great bar up top.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 November 2023

A really thorough and well-curated museum which, surprisingly, was almost empty; maybe because it's near the beach rather than in the old town? (The #47 bus will take you right there, though.) Much better put together and more contentful than the more popular MUHBA, covering the intricate political, economic, and social history of the region from the Stone Age to the 21st century. And it's one of the only places in Spain we saw that talks directly about what happened in the country during the civil war and under Franco's subsequent dictatorship.

The museum is well done and interesting. The audio tour was just detailed enough but not too long. The skip the line was seamless

Very interesting museum covering the history of Catalunya from Palaeolithic times to now. Some sections were better than others but the central theme of Catalunya’s quest for independence runs throughout all the sections. Coverage of the civil war and its aftermath was very disappointing given the enormity of the war and the importance of Catalunya in the war. Even so, we spent hours there and ended up rushing through the final sections. The roof top garden bar is a fantastic way to end the day with a vermouth or two, watching the sunset over a harbour full of billionaire yachts, a far cry from Barceloneta’s modest beginnings

Didn't manage to get in to see this interesting looking museum, since it was closed despite the museum's website saying that it was open. That was merely frustrating but the really rude and almost comically unpleasant young woman officiating at the entrance was not a good look for the place. I hope she gets moved on to a less public-facing role, for the sake of the museum and the people who are keen to experience it.

This museum is really well done! There are many interactive displays and the labels are very clearly written. We spent a whole afternoon there and definitely could have spent more time to read really everything.

I booked a ticket for the History of Catalonia Museum for a May 18, 2022 admission, which was International Museum Day. Admission was free to all on that day but TripAdvisor kept the admission fee anyway.

I love listening to Sardanas , the typical Catalan, Folkloric dance.
Can I buy any Cd in the Museum ?
Does the museum have any special exhibition dedicated to such a marvelous dance ?
Thanks

Is there an English translation along side the Spanish, or a book in English we could get? My husband speaks some Spanish but I do not. Thank you!

where is the car parking for this museum?

Honestly, I didn't notice anything about parking. The area is very congested. This museum is readily reached by public transportation and walking. In fact, we aren't young but we walked most everywhere around Barcelona. It is the easiest way to see most everything. Most of the locals use motorbikes. I did see a number of cabs that let off passengers and picked them up near the museum. If you can't walk a taxi would be a better alternative.
