I used to live in Barcelona for many years, so my review is local, and I do have extensive university coursework in arts, literature, and philosophy, so trust my brief review and go to this place! This is a hidden gem in Barcelona. Very few tourists go here, I am not sure why. You can just walk by, enter (it... More

The Basilica has free admission prior to 1300 and after 1700 and should absolutely be on your list of places to visit. Compared to the other Gothic Cathedrals, the history and simplicity of this church makes it stand out. For an extra fee you can have a mini tour and go up to the rooftops. The mini tour was worth... They began building the Basilica in 1323, so in my opinion this is a must see. Stay as little or as long as you want. Architecture is amazing.

We arrived at 11:45AM for the noon mass and was fortunate to gt good seats to see the Mass and to take photos. The church is absolutely beautiful on the fascade outside and the interior inside. The mass was mostly in Spanish with a few English, German and Dutch words occasionally but the Mass was conducted as we do in... More

Admission free -- one of Spain's many beautiful churches. Built 1329 to 1384, in the Catalan Gothic style. Massive outside, light and airy inside, with a beautiful rose window dominating center aisle. The unity in the style inside with the columns rising endlessly above, topped by an elegant ceiling of many domes and arches, makes this medieval church simply beautiful!... More

Among the many special churches in Barcelona this one has a special story. It was built by working men whose contribution was their labor. It was built in a relatively short time so it's look is more coherent architecturally than many. To accompany your visit read Ildefonso Falcones' book, Cathedral of the Seas for although a novel, it gives a... More

Dark and beautiful, simply decorated. We lit candles for family members. Easy to find and access is free. Beautiful tiny streets surrounding.

This Basilica is in the heart of El Born. We stayed just up the block from it and it was busy at all hours of the day. The inside is really pretty and gives a good sense of the time when it was built.

Very beautiful inside, lots to see and do. Paid about 3 euros to take the elevator up to see the view from the roof. We had assumed it was the bell tower, but it was just the roof. Cool view, but had bigger expectations. The roof was also under construction so that took away from the nice view.

Staying in El Born / La Ribera

Neighbourhood Profile
El Born / La Ribera
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighbourhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.
