This Basilica is beautiful and off the beaten path. It´s located in the northern part of Barri Gotic and is farther away from the tourist shops. I recommend coming here and getting lost in the neighborhood. There´s a lot to find and explore including sections...More

A pure example of Catalan Gothic architecture, this is by far the most beautiful church in Barcelona. Soaring arches, gorgeous stained glass windows, elegant lines. A marvel!

Fine and atmospheric gothic cathedral. From the outside it looks quite plain, almost Spartan, but wait until you are inside! The light from the windows sets off the magnificent columns, quite something.

This cathedral was first built over 55 years in the 1300's and has had various renovations since then. The high altar contains the original Virgin of the Sea statue which was worshipped by the Bastiaxos who carried the stones from the local quarry. The book...More

This is my favourite space in Barcelona - whether you go to a mass (which I did for the acoustics), a music performance or a tour, Santa Maria del Mar is very special. This is one of my must see places in Barcelona. The stripped...More

Wonderful high-ceilinged church in the El Born quarter. Quiet and calm, wonderful stained glass. Great plaza out front, although quite heavily touristed. Worth a visit both for the church and for the neighbourhood

Beautiful inside and out and neatly tucked into the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood. Such a grand Basilica with so much history. The stories behind the stained glass windows were fascinating. Also, be sure you look down where you are walking, as there is...More

We visited at about 830am and there were very few people. We passed by the Cathedral square at approx. noon and it was overrun with people. It is best to go early to so it at its best.

This is a beautiful basilica of Gothic architecture located away from Barcelona. This place is a must visit. It is breath taking from the inside and outside.

The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent
the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But
this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually
enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few
places that live and breathe such exciting energy
regardless of the time of day. This neighbourhood
seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the
city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants

There is no special dress code. But as usual in every church you should not wear short trousers and you should cover your shoulders.

I noted in one of the reviews that someone mentioned needing to wear a long skirt, but didn't find any other mention of it. Is there a dress code?

Not for Santa Maria del Mar, but avoid using something too short, the main problem is in Barcelona's cathedral they are the ones that wont let you get in using anything above the knees or without sleeves
