About
The Maritime Museum of Barcelona is an institution dedicated to maritime culture with more than 80 years of history whose mission is to preserve, study and disseminate one of the most important collections of maritime heritage in the Mediterranean. It is located in the building of the Royal Shipyards, on the seafront of the city and at the foot of the mountain of Montjuïc. The original use of the historic building was the construction of warships for the Crown of Aragon fleet. The Shipyards were listed, in 1976, as a Historic-Artistic Monument. In 2006, the Maritime Museum of Barcelona was declared a Museum of National Interest.

Neighbourhood: El Raval
Once a downtrodden corner of downtown Barcelona, this gritty area has seen a cultural resurgence boasting an excellent nightlife and one of the most multi ethnic spots in the entire city. A sense of humble authenticity protrudes from the many independent record stores, second hand shops, and student bars that seem to light up the streets day and night. The rocking epicenter, the MACBA Plaça, is a modern day forum for bohemian youth, abuzz with the sights and sounds of late-night gatherings and talented skateboarders showing off their latest tricks.

This museum will appeal to lovers of both maritime/naval and architectural history. Situated in the restored Barcelona Royal Shipyard buildings (construction started in the 13th century), this museum will particularly appeal to those interested in the days of the galleys, leading up to the Battle of Lepanto (1571), and naval warfare in the western Mediterranean. The key feature is a replica galley built in 1971 to commemorate Lepanto's 400th anniversary. There are also exhibits covering the transition from sail to steam and Spain's (particularly Catalonia's) role in developing a global empire and trading network. Definitely worth a visit! It is appropriately situated next to the monument celebrating Christopher Columbus!

I visit this place with a friend last month and it was a verry interesting visit, I've learned so much about Barcelona and the way this city take place in naval history. It was a great experience; we were practically alone in the museum so we could take time to hang-out and paid attention to the details of the wonderful ship models. The only thing I regret is that all the information were in English or in Spanish and my native language is French so I didn't understand everything. But at least I practiced my English 👌I recommend this museum to everyone it is such an underrated place.

Located not far from the statue of Columbus, at the ocean end of the Rambla; a pleasing change from Barcelona’s Gaudi overload. The exterior design of the museum is simple and striking; a vast building, the interior flooded with natural light, graceful tall stone arches, linked with timber ceilings. Especially striking is the faithful reproduction of a galley from the 16th Century - 60 metres 200ft long, historically driven by 59 oars and the strength of 236 rowers. The museum has an extensive collection of ships and boats and a large exhibition on the construction of medieval sailing ships. Also a vast collection of ships models, figure heads, navigational instruments etc.
Entry €10 adults, €5concession seniors. Free Sundays after 3pm

Fantastic. Went based on other trip advisor reviews and completely agree, this is a great museum. It has the perfect combination of artifacts, exhibits and education. Enough to read to learn something new but not overwhelming. I appreciated having English as a signage language. You’ll find all the usual suspects in a maritime museum including small boats, models of larger ships, mastheads etc. The to scale 1:1 galley is a marvel. For an extra three euro you can board the 100 year Santa Eulalia.

The museum does have free entrance so check the website for those hours. There wasn’t a line at all when I went which was really nice. It was easy to wander over and enjoy the port of Barcelona after.

This is the most under-rated site. It's modern, easy to walk around. They have great displays with excellent explanations. Note to Cruise passengers, they also have lockers you can check your bags in while you visit the museum. Though the larger lockers are on top. We couldn't get into our apartment until noon so we checked in our bags, walked around the amazing museum and then had a lovely lunch in the cafe. Completely worth the money.

Come to see a block-long sixteenth century galleon in a fourteenth century boatyard (overlook the poorly designed exhibits)

The highlight of this museum is the the full-size replica of a 1590's vintage royal galley which served in battles in the Mediterranean! The galley is stunning! Embellished with gold and incredible carvings, a carving of Neptune rides the bow. And the setting is stunning, stone pillars and ship-worked wood ceilings! If you have any interest in history, this is a must see!

Centuries when Barcelona was a formidable sea power, these Royal shipyards turned out galley after galley to guarantee a continuance of that dominance.

Wonderfully conserved it was fascinating to learn that the superb complex is now regarded as the most thorough and extensive of its nature in the wide world.

It was marvellous strolling amongst the exceptional displays learning about its conquest of the seas and all the benefits accruing.

A full-scale recreation of the Real, flagship of Don Juan of Austria, is awe inspiring. Vast, it was great walking around it, ascending to higher levels and traversing it. Highly ornate and in beautiful red and golden colours.

Don Juan led the Christian forces at the key battle of Lepanto in 1571 that resulted in the defeat of the Ottomans.

It is a glorious monument to those momentous events and times.

What a lovely museum. Great exhibits well explained in three languages. We loved it. The reconstruction of the royal galley was a real eye-opener for us. The other exhibits were well displayed and informative. Excellent.
