About
Standing on a vantage point 173 metres above the port, Montjuïc Castle commands stunning views of the city. Now a peaceable place, the memory of this fortress endures in Barcelona as a symbol of repression but also of the city's struggles during different periods in its history. The top of Montjuïc is the ideal place for a bastion of defence, with 360º views of the city below. However, this military enclave wasn't built until the Reapers' War in 1640. In 1652, the fortress, which stands on the site of a watchtower, came under royal ownership and, some 50 years later, was one of the key defence points in the War of the Spanish Succession, between 1705 and 1714.

    Nice views at the top
It takes a lot to get to the Castle! We took the metro from Las Ramblas and got off the train at the appropriate stop, but then you have to make your way to the Montjuic train, which is a modified funicular. We made the mistake of going through the subway exit and had to turn around and buy another ticket to get back inside the passageway to the Montjuic train. Once the train gets you to Montjuic, you then have to take a cable car to get up to the Castle. It took us about an hour with the trains, wait in lines and transfers. I have to say, the Castle is like any other fortification that we have visited, so nothing new here, but the views overlooking Barcelona and the harbor were fantastic! You can get back down the mountain the way you came, or you can walk down.

Should be in the top ten things to see in Barcelona
This is a must see when you visit Barcelona. You need to allow a few hours though. We got off from a city tour bus. You can take a cable car up to the fortress (about €15 return) the views from the cable car are spectacular. If you want to get to the top of the fortress you will have to pay again ( about €12) the all round view from the top is spectacular. If you don’t want yo spend entrance to the fortress it is free to amble about outside and you will get in fabulous views too. After this it was too late for us to continue on the bus tour so we got the funicular train down to the subway network and got back to our accommodation from there. The tour bus ticket lasted a couple of days do we resumed that the following day

    Walking up and down Montjuic.
The walk from Port Vell in Barcelona through several gardens to the top of Montjuic is amazing. While you climb up the hill (roughly 3 km) the view keeps getting more and more beautiful. Depending on the site of the hill, you look at the port, the sea or over the city. I didn't have time to visit inside the castle, but the outside is impressive in itself. The Olympic Stadium was also missed by me, but if you have time there are many things to see @Montjuic. Cyclers and joggers find each-other and exchange the experiences of the climb at the place just before the bridge to the castle. Altogether a couple of hours well spend.

    Modern fortress
You have to be aware, this is not a castle, but a modern military fortress built in 17th century during Reapers War to protect the city. There is no furniture or anything. No noble family lived there. It is not a castle but a fortress. If you understand the difference, you will like it. There are really beautiful views of both - the port and the city itself, which are themselves worth it. The price is 12 EUR and it definitely should be lower as there is nothing and you are just paying to walk between those magnificent walls and read tables. Also there there is nothing to do for more than 1 hour. You have to combine it with other activities. It is possible to visit some museums on this hill if you return with the funicular to the park.

    Great views of Barcelona
I think the nicest way to get up here is to take the underground to Parallel station and then the funiclar (with the same ticket) up to the station where you take the cable car. Then you can walk around the park and enjoy the views and then visit the castle. The castle itself is okay, you really come here for the views which are a 360 panorama of the whole city. Quite impressive on a clear day.

    Good views
Lovely views and had a nice packed lunch at the top. Not too much information around and would be best with one of the audio headsets if you want more than just views. Although the walk up from the funicular stop Av Miramar was steep, it had steps and was not too bad. There are better view points in the city and for less money.

    Nice half-day
Difficult to add to previous reviews. The views are astonishing and the trip is worth it just for this. The inside of the castle is a damp squib, but the cable-car/funicular made it fun, and the little cafe was welcome and nice.

    Worth the uphill climb
We enjoyed spending our morning here. We had planned to take the cable car up to the castle but when we got to the station we realised they were shut for maintenance. Decided to walk to the castle- I was worried it would be too difficult for the older members of our group (mid 60s- medium fitness), but they manged it. It was uphill but it was only about 20mins. It was worth the views when we got there. The exhibitions within the castle could have been better but we enjoyed our time there

    Great views, worth a visit!
Definitely worth the trip! We didn’t pay to go inside as had read reviews that said it wasn’t worth the money, so we just got the cable car up and then walked around the outside which was nice as had lovely views. The walk up instead of taking the cable car looked nice too so would try that next time. When we got down to the bottom we took the funicular back into town which was a fun experience for the family.

If you are visiting the Montjuic Castle, there is cafeteria-restaurant inside and it is the only possibility to eat and not a good one. Eat before you visit the castle, but somewhere else.

There were only about ten people on a waiting line to this cafeteria-restaurant but it took half an hour to order and then almost the same to get your food.

Food (curry chicken) was almost cold, maybe the sauce had been in the micro wave oven? We ate, as we were hungry, but would not eat again. The curry portion costs about 11 euros.

Maybe it’s just due to COVID, but this was a pointless excursion. The cable car to the castle was far too expensive for the ride (€13.50 per person, round trip). Also, everything except 3 very small, mediocre, exhibitions are closed and it’s €5 per person. What they don’t tell you is that if you’re under 29 years old, your ticket is €3 per person. Simply... don’t waste your time or money on this. It’s €3 for a 30 minute bus ride to Tibidabo and the views are far better!

We decided to take the walk up instead of taking the cable car or taxi. Tried after walk. Got to the castle at 5.35pm. Unfortauntely it was winter opening times and the castle closed at 5.30pm that day. So we couldn't get in. We walked around the castle to find a view of the setting sun, but it's hard to find any spot as the trees are too tall and blocks the view of the horizon. I guess all the views are reserved for people who actually go inside the castle Eventually we did find one spot after walking around the whole castle where we could see the sunset. A few other people were also there at that spot as well. There is an admission fee to enter the castle (but as we didn't go in I don't recall the price). The surrounding area around the castle is free admission. We walked down a little from the castle and found a bus stop where there were some buses that went to downtown Barcelona area where we found a metro station. Would have rated the castle higher, but didn't go in

We came here with high expectations and left a bit disappointed. This is a bare fort with nothing to show, but some rusty WWII canons (not interesting at all). It is a bit of a climb from the city center, so unless you are already in the area and want some high views of the city, I would not waste time and money coming here. We got an Uber here from Eixample, and walked back down. We got tickets onsite on a Sunday afternoon and the place was fairly empty. Skip this place…

It was a slightly cloudy day when we visited Montjuic Castle but this certainly did not affect the views! Entry was £9 each which gave us entry to the whole castle including the roof which provides panoramic views of Barcelona, including the airport, sea and the entire city which provides a unique view of the Sagrada Familia! My only slight complaint would be the state of the toilets- they were being cleaned when we went to use them however an unfortunate language barrier made it unclear whether they were ready to use or not. Apart from this small issue I would definitely recommend visiting the Castle not just for the views but for the cultural experience too.

This castle has amazing views of Barcelona and environs. The castle has a very interesting exhibition about its history and the locality. The cafe seves a good selection of freshly prepared food that you can enjoy in the courtyard. We used the cable car to arrive in style.

Montjuic Castle offers some nice views of the city and it is 10 euros for the entry ticket. There are many ways to reach it, we came using the public transport including the funicular and used the teleferic. There are some temporary exhibits, a small café/restaurant and washrooms inside the castle.

We were here more for the views and the walks through the gardens and not so interested in the castle itself and after paying the rip off 16 Euros for the cable car I fancied saving the 12 Euros to enter the castle especially as there are no senior concessions for this attraction either. So I will have to leave it up to others to tell you how good the castle is itself.
But the views and walks when you are up here are spectacular and its worth the trip for those. Perhaps it’s the engineer in me but I differ from several others and thought the views of the Barcelona container port added to the experience. The walk all round the castle provides excellent views over the city of Barcelona and the new Marina developments but also Barcelona’s container port (where they also dock the cruise ships) and it’s only from up here that you get a true perspective for how massive a container port Barcelona is.
Then several other walks radiate off from the castle through the various gardens that have been built into this green space.

Lovely views of Barcelona and you get to learn more about the history behind Montjuic. Lots of the rooms were closed so there wasn't as many things to do or see as we had anticipated but was a good experience nevertheless.

There are also lots of tourist spots nearby such as Poble Espanyol, MNAC museum, the Fountains and the Olympic Stadium, so could easily spend a day in this area if you wanted!

We decided to not take the cable cars up and chose to take the bus (150) from Espanya using our day travel passes. Definitely wouldn't recommend walking up in the summer.

We got a metro then the fenicular (which we were able to travel on using the travel pass we purchased to get around Barcelona with ease). Then we paid to go on the cable car to get us to the top where the castle is (fantastic views from the cable cars) and then right up to the castle. It was a Sunday when we came up in the morning in early November and we along with other people were queing to get in and were ready to pay but we were told there was no charge today, we have no idea why but they just waved us in. So that was a bonus. It is quite a large place but you get some fantastic views from up here too also. It is quite a interesting place and some lovely gardens etc that are all well maintained.
