There's approximately 40000 uni students in Salamanca and their facilities and buildings are enormous. You can stroll through the campus and enjoy the atmosphere or visit the 800 yr old reception and cafeteria is worth a visit as it's more decorative than some of the other heritage buildings around.

The University’s façade is a plateresque design carved out of stone, with a highly decorative style and intricate carvings. The most interesting thing is to find the frog on the facade because it is supposed to bring you luck.

One of the more expensive places to visit in Salamanca but still good value - not many other places where you can see University buildings almost unchanged in 500 years. Lecture theatres with c16th benches, an amazing library of several thousand ancient books and manuscripts (viewed through a glass screen unfortunately). And some stunning architecture. Don't miss the Cielo de... More

There can be some dispute about which is the oldest University in Europe but this sure is OLD! Founded in 1218 with wonderful buildings - it just feels like a place of learning. The old library is well worth a visit. The newer library was closed when we visited. The old lecturure theatres are full of character (and initials and... More

We spent nearly two hours and enjoyed the building and all of the exhibits. We didn't use the audio guides but there were clear descriptions in English throughout the building. Fantastic building and history.

The details and Masonry is so fine, it's difficult to believe. Something that is difficult to take in all at once but remains with you after you leave as you continue to ponder the scenery.

This is your chance to find the frog on the university facade. Try to read up on how to find it, otherwise ask someone if there is a crowd around. It is not that easy to spot. Otherwise the general buildings from the outside are great to look at.
