Another of the beautiful doors of Toledo. Located near the Puerta de la Bisagra, it was renovated in the 17th century. Its towers and double arches stand out. It is worth stopping for a few minutes to contemplate it.

One of the many magnificent ancient gateways into the city of Toledo, the others being Puerta del Sol, Puerta del Cambrón and Puerta Bisagra.
This gateway is also known as the Puerta Vieja de Bisagra (the old Bisagra Gate). When the new Puerta Bisagra was built in the time of Charles V it was bricked up and abandoned for many years. In 1905 work started to renovate the doorway, again in the 1970’s the doorway was remodelled and is as we see it today, and it is the only surviving part of the Arab wall and dates from the 9th century.
Each gate, bridge and fortification has its own story to tell just look at the carvings and inscriptions on each gate.

Located just down from the Bisagra Gate, the Puerta de Alfonso (sometimes called “the old Bisagra gate”) is yet another of Toledo’s impressive medieval gates. We preferred this to the (new) Bisagra Gate because it’s not surrounded by traffic … just a small car park. Inside the gate is an area of peaceful calm, and some of the stonework looks convincingly modern – it must surely have been repaired at some point!
Dating from the 10th century, its three horseshoe arches provide a solid, defensible entrance to the city. Admirable design and build!

The Puerta de Alfonso VI is located at Calle Alfonso VI. It was the main entrance to the town during the Moorish times. It was constructed in the 10th century and renovated in the 13th century. It is known as the Old Gate of Bisagra. The Emperor Carlos V constructed the New Gate of Bisagra nearby and the Old Gate was closed and accumulated debris. However in 1905 the Marques de Fuensanta de Palma had it opened and restored. The façade has two fortified towers and there are three arches. The central arch is circular and the two side arches are pointed. Under the central arch there is a horseshoe arch with a lintel and this allows one to enter the city.

It has an Arabian style, with an impressive stone structure, very big. Built on the IX century. Located at 200 meters from the “Puerta de Bisagra” and aside from the Hacienda del Cardenal restaurant.

This gate is the only surviving part of the Arab wall built around Toledo in 9th century and was the only gate at that time. This gate is also known as the Puerta Vieja de Bisagra or the Old Bisagra Gate as a new gate called the Bisagra Gate was built by Charles V much later. The gate is characterised by 3 horseshoe arches, the largest one in the middle flanked by two smaller ones.

You can park your car free of charge in the parking area in the Avenida Carlos III, just next to the remains of the Roman Circus.
Walk in the direction of the City wall (the Paseo Recarado).
Enjoy the beautiful gate and can take the "escaleros mecanicos" to old city center.

Impressive gate to the old city of Toledo. Looking impregnable, this would have been a major defense of the old city in medieval times.
