I so desperately wanted to give this 5 stars but had a hard time even giving it 3 stars. From our hotel it was quite a haul up a ton of stairs to get here on a cold windy November day. It was free to visit but alas, you get what you paid for. Obviously we did not read the other reviews that everything that you actually go to see is closed. There are old ruins to take a look at as you ride the escalator that last as long the escalator ride. The only reason that I gave it 3 stars is the exterior is wonderful to look at and you also get a great view from the grounds of the surrounding area. Maybe this place will be finished before the Sagrada Familia. My advice is to set your expectations low so you are not disappointed. Sort of enjoy.

    Mostly Closed for Renovations
We were just not having a good visit to Toledo as the Alcazar was the next spot that was only partially accessible. Luckily they waived admission. The following temporary exhibitions or areas were the only ones available during our visit: Outdoors we passed by the cafe with its helicopter and through the fog saw tanks, a huge slab of steel used for firing practice and the Monumento a la Gesta del Alcazar. Parade Ground was accessed after walking completely around the Alcazar. It was an indoor courtyard but not much to see except for a statue of Carlos V and some cannons. Excavations gave us a view of what the Alcazar was built over with some portions dating back to the Moors and Romans. Temporary exhibition hall featured displays of weapons, mannequins dressed in their war gear from different time periods. At the end there was an interesting section about the Spanish in the Philippines but details were printed in Spanish only. Hopefully the museum reopens soon.

Spectacular Archaeological remains and the Alcazar exterior and patio.
We had a free hour in Toledo and to pass the time we entered the Museum, knowing that the historic Alcazar was closed due to a fire. We were pleasantly surprised! Inside there were two temporary exhibitions, one on music in the army and one on the development of armies over the centuries. Both were interesting. However the real highlight were the archaeological remains of the fortresses which preceded the present Alcazar and which have been buried for years. Roman, Moorish and Visigothic remains can be seen from viewing platforms accessed via escalator. You then exit the museum and walk round the 4 restored façades of the Alcazar (which was reduced to rubble in the Spanish Civil War) and access the central patio via the Covarrubias façade showing how the castle appeared in the times of the Emperor Charles V. Admission is free.

As with all of the other museums we have been to in Spain, this place is quite similar in that it is overstaffed and most of them can be really rude to the public. At the ticket counter, we politely asked if students can enter for free, and when the lady at that counter saw that my daughter's student card was from a UK university, she rudely and unpleasantly commented that it is free only for EU university students. We didn't mind paying because it was cheap anyway, but rude staff at a public place certainly gives a bad reflection of the kind of people this museum employs.

Parts of the old castle can still be seen with new floors raised above it that houses the museum. The museum is quite large with quite a lot to see, and the only good thing is that photos were allowed indoors. There were some tanks and artillery pieces placed outside near the restaurant, but for some reason the area was closed at 4pm and were partly visible from the glass door that was locked.

Admission is free because almost the entire museum is undergoing renovations, so there are hardly any areas that can be seen.
The negative assessment is due to the behavior of the man at the security check, totally arrogant, rude and threatening. He explains poorly and then gets angry if you place the objects incorrectly (and I had asked him previously). He seems to be tired of museum visitors.

I recommend that if a person works in front of the public they should have better social and communication skills.

This is the first time I've ever been disappointed by a museum. This museum obviously has a great collection of artefacts from various time periods. However, they have been lumped together into a meaningless jumble that has no sequence or connection.
What I had expected was a history of the army in Spain from the very first concept of an army. Spain has a very interesting military history dating from pre-Roman times, and has witnessed multiple complex and defining conflicts. None of this is presented in the museum.
Instead, there are rooms of "stuff" which seem to have no purpose. For example, a room full of lots of the same style of armour, a room with miscellaneous photos, a room with toy soldiers. The thematic rooms have no connection between them. Even the historical journey jumps about and does not provide a connected story.
Furthermore, the staff are rude in the extreme.

You can view some archaeological ruins - albeit also within these the large concrete pads that now hold up the modern roof. A temporary exhibit on Spain interesting - but all in Spanish with no translations.

I was interested to see the rooms on more modern history and the civil war. No access. Not sure why. Others seem to comment on renovations or a fire but all looks good from the outside and no building work evident.

So not really worth it. Some views - but you can see from outside.

Disappointing.

Was OK, It was boring to walk in loops on windowless rooms especially with no spanish history. It felt more i was a student on a field trip. Took us about two to three hours just to fast walk all around the Alcazar, Other than the weapons room we didnt spend much time on other exhibits. If you are from Spain or a history buff you might like it, Being a day trip to Toledo and our first stop was at the Alcazar I wish i spent less time here so i would have more time to spend at other attractions.

Yet another possibly interesting museum that is basically closed though you may walk around the outside. Exhibit areas and galleries, viewed from a distance, seemed to have interesting exhibits but staff claimed that there was a fire six months earlier and all of the interior exhibit areas are closed to the public. This seems to be a typical occurrence in Espana.

Visited today June 26 2022.

The audio guides don’t match the numbers. 2 euros - cash only - no refund - useless. Wall inscriptions are fine.

The museum is well organized cool and clean. The last floor was closed.
