At night it gets lit up, and it looks amazing.. The building is a concert venue, I guess that is good...a cultural strip. Yet it blocks the beauty of the ocean in San Sebastian.

We'd been walking around and past it for a couple days before we went in. Good exhibit of an artist whose work was sort of interesting but not as grand (in my opinion) as the descriptions seemed to claim. Well presented though.
So, it's nice to have a cultural center of course, but why stick it on the beach? It seems to be there because there was once a casino there. Not a good reason. It completely blocks the view of the gorgeous coast. It includes a couple of retail shops, but no cafés, so seems to underuse what should be a vital spot. It is just odd there.
Most of the retail accross the street from the beach doesn't reflect its importance at all either - why is there a mattress shop on a prime corner? And a car dealership?
I actually liked the modern Kursaal building & the way the art exhibit was hung too. It's just in an unfortunate location.

The Kursaal is a big modern building that is lighted at night and is beside the River Urumea, at the confluence of the river and the sea. This building is the Kursaal, the auditorium of the city and site of the international film festival, which is held every year in San Sebastian. It was designed by Rafael Moneo, a famous Spanish architect and winner of the Pritzker Prize of Architecture. It opened in 1999. It is also a convention center with many exhibition halls and meeting rooms.

This architectural monstrosity blocks one´s view of a beautiful bay and constitutes the only ugly aspect of the otherwise enchanting neighbourhood of Gros in Donostia. You get concerts etc. here so if the concert is interesting, go. Otherwise avoid.

We went to Kursaal for breakfast and it was great. Yoghurt, toast, coffee, jam and a great view for less than 4 euros.

Another completely "closed-to-its- surrounds" monumental, lump of a building located horrifically by the sea and riverside edge. Why does this happen again and again? San Sebastian is a beautiful Town so it can absorb this monster - fortunately without losing too much value. But a building of this size and expense should enhance and add value. Not degrade and destroy such a wonderful location. A monster wrapped in sackcloth.

San Sebastian is a very beautiful city, with really nice 19 cent architecture, cared for facades, etc...so putting this glass cube on a prime location by the Zurriola beach and in front of beautiful houses isn't something I'd do.
But, probably greater minds decided to do so, so this multi function venue, most famous for SS film festival stands here making a huge contrast to the surroundings.

The place is very important historically and because it hosts Sen Sebastian Film Festival. It situated extremely attractively on the ocean shore, but the architecture of it and the way of its maintainance could be better.
