Place is the saddest market I have been to. Limited variety of vendors. Building is very dirty and tired. Spend your precious time going/doing something else.

Do visit if you are looking for the freshest meats, fish and seafood to take home. Don’t visit I’d you want ready to eat foodstuffs or fresh fruits and vegetables. Definitely not as impressive as other markets I’ve visited; I was expecting more in such a food forward city.

Very poor selection of fruits and vegetables and not many stands for fish and meats. Most of the meat stands offered cured meats and cheeses along with fresh meats and poultry, they are not just butcher shops like in other places.

The market is on a lower level and it is dark and unwelcoming.

Always take the opportunity to wander around the local markets when away and marvel at the local produce on display.

Even though this mercado is right on the edge of the old city, few tourists stop in. The main reason to go is the supermarket in the basement. If you want snacks or toiletries and the like, the market has an okay selection at better prices. The fish/meat/cheese market is a wonderful photo opportunity and a source of the freshest product around if you are renting an apartment where you can cook. The olive oil shop there is a bit of a tourist trap. The staff is friendly, but kind of unhelpful, as everything they stock is "the best." Can ten different brands of paprika all be the best? There are Basque product shops in the old town that I think have fewer but better olive oils. But everyone should take a half hour and have a look.

The food market here isn’t particularly large but has a decent selection of meat, fish and vegetable stalls. There are also a couple of stalls selling “deli” type stuff and I was delighted to find some very good saffron at a decent price.

Whenever we visit a new place, a trip to the local market is a must! La Mercado de la Bretxa did not disappoint. Although we could not see much in the fish market as it was a Monday, the range of Spanish products and local produce elsewhere was wide and very interesting. The vendors were helpful and took time in showing us their merchandise.

It struck us more like a 2-floor indoor shopping mall (which detracted from the traditional "mercados" we've seen everywhere in Europe. Having a McDonald's anchor one end of the market did not add to its atmosphere.

Inside there was a big grocery store. There did not seem to be the usual collection of fresh food and fish vendors we associate with these kinds of central markets.
