The Church of San Nicolas is located at Plazuela San Nicolás, 1. It was built in 1743 by the architect Ignacio Ibero y Erkizia and inaugurated in 1756. The district where is found is called El Arenal. The church was built in honor of San Nicolas de Bari, the patron saint of sailors. The church has a moderately Baroque style. The floor plan is the Greek cross. It is covered with a cupola. Its octagonal interior boasts five magnificent altarpieces and sculptures by Juan Pascual de Mena, the best sculptor at that time. The corners of the church are occupied by chapels and the sacristy. The façade has the principal entrance and one tower on each side, resembling the Cathedral of Mexico city. The façade is a bit plain, but this was the Baroque style in Vizcaya.

Walking along the Nervion River, we admired this simple 18th-century Baroque church with two identical towers and decided to go inside. We had not expected to find an unusual octagonal floor plan nor the many wood details. Carvings and paintings contributed to the rich decorations, and the altar was absolutely gorgeous
Only a few others joined us there, and the peaceful atmosphere during a busy holiday weekend was most welcome. We wanted to stay longer but had an appointment elsewhere. This church has been added to our "visit again" list for the next sojourn in Bilbao.
Iglesia de San Nicolas has no admission charge. It stands across from Tetro Arriaga and close to Plaza Neuvo, both also worth a stop.

This is a lovely old church with a welcoming vibe for tourists, peregrinos, and locals, alike. It is also conveniently located near the subway.

Didn't go inside but had a good close look at the west front which is quite photogenic. Church has that "Spanish" look (the 2 little towers) but not in the OTT colonial style. The creamy stone front has obviously had a "deep clean" since Bilbao's industrial era ended. The fine front is complimented by the tree covered outdoor market place opposite. There seemed to be some curious colonnades going down each outer side.

At the very north approach to the Old Town sits the church of St Nicolas. This is a fine Baroque church, small, but well worth a visit as it contains excellent selection of statues, icons and carvings. Opening times are limitet, normally 10:30am – 1pm and again 5 – 8pm. Entrance is free but an offering for upkeep is always appreciated.

As soon as you cross the Ria of Bilbao you encounter this ancient church. The architecture and the ancient ambiance reminds you of the old historic times. The streets have been preserved with same atmosphere and you feel like being carried away back in time.

The church is beautiful, but as usually at catholic churches, you have to pay for anything and devotion or pray is secondary

This baroque church, built in 1756, is located at the edge of the Old Town and across the street from El Arenal Park. The exterior is quite severe and uninviting, but the interior is far interesting, with its white walls and dark wood alters. Worth a visit when you're in the vicinity of the Old Town.

The church of San Nicolás located in the city of Bilbao is a baroque Catholic temple inaugurated in 1756. It is located in the Casco Viejo (old town) in Bilbao. It's specifically in the Plaza de San Nicolás and its façade faces the Arriaga theater. The love of God & the church is shown in the workmanship of the structure and works of art inside.
