The site is surrounded by corrugated aluminum and there is a construction crane at the site. not quite a medieval mystery spot right now.

This is such an impressive castle. It's a bit hidden away, but if you know about it, then it's easy to find. There's big free carpark just a 2min walk away and even a small bar/restaurant.

The castle itself can only be enjoyed from outside. But what an impressive sight it is. It is very well preserved, even though time and weather left some patina.
For over three hundred years, from the 16th century onwards, the castle was the scene of non-stop and bloody fights between two sides of Bizkaia's nobility. The lords of Butrón, sheltered in the castle, exerted their power in that area.
Later on the castle was abandoned and it deteriorated until its restoration in the late 19th century. In November 2005 the building was purchased by a group for only 1,629,743 euros and is until now closed for visitors.
But you can go up close to it until the front door. And you also can walk around the castle - a small path is leading the way. There are some visitors, but if you got some time on your hands, you will get great pics with nobody else on it. There is some kind of guard/security with his car around and blocks the views. But he leaves sometimes for a break. Taking the car with. That's the moment for your perfect pic.

It surely is one of the most impressive castles here in Northern Spain and definitely worth a drive and a visit. Would love to see the inside. But who knows. Maybe one day.

Absolutely beautiful! Needs some maintanance and resotoration though. I was informed that you could enter the castle in the past, but it looks like it is in direpair now. Who owns this place? and can they please try to improve the overall layout of this European masterpiece? The walls have shrubs growing out of it, there is paint markings on some parts of the wall. An option to enter would be incredible!

This place was great! Literally a deserted castle with no one around! we walked around it and stayed for maybe 30 min. Ive never seen anything like it...a big beautiful castle right in the middle of nowhere! Being from the states it was hard to believe there was no one else around! It was about 20-30 min outside of Bilbao

Castillo de Butron is a castle located in Bizkaia Region, in Basque Country. It was reconstructed in a neogothic style in the 19th Century and it is surrounded by nature. Really, it seems a Loira Castle and you do not expect find it here, in the middle of Basquue Country. A very curious building, where pitifully you can not enter to do a guided visit, because it is private and nowadays closed. You only can surround it and see the park and all facades of the castle. Nice and very curious.

Butron is is in the countryside near Bilbao. It was built during the Gothic revival fad of the 1800s and is definitely a fantasy castle. Unfortunately, you can't go inside, but it is great place to have your picture taken.

it's not a very known place to visit in the basque country, but this castle is amazing. the only problem is that is the inside is not visitable but in any case, is worth to see the outside. Car is required to arrive there, you can do a route. It's close to Bilbao.

It is not hard to find at all as some said. Clearly sign posted and the Apple/Google map was accurate. Easy parking. We parked by the river/bridge just a little ahead of the playground and then it's just a short walk to the castle. Can't go it but can walk around it and take as many photos as you want. If you drive, then this is a worthy short visit. We came here after we'd done Gaztelugatxe, which is not far from it at all. It is a beautiful castle. But if we had limited time or had to get public transport to come, then no.

We had a lovely wander around this castle. Would have absolutely loved to go inside. Looks magical. Grounds surrounding are overgrown but it adds to the magic. You park very close and only have to walk a little

This castle makes you VERY curious around how it was in the medieval time when the centerpart wasnt built. Even through you cannot go inside it is a magnificent masterpiece well worth visiting. Go up to the wooden door and count how many holes for crossbows you can see.
