Interesting and free visit on Sunday.
The history of this hospital is interesting but the highlight of the show. THE CHURCH.
In the four corners, 4 master paintings, dark at the entrance with 2 paintings by Valdes Leal and much more colorful in the background with two paintings by Murillo.

Visited with a very informative audio guide. The church is outstanding and you also see the courtyard, gardens and a brand new museum which we thought was brilliantly done. There were few other visitors there. If you’re into history then I’d recommend it.

This a small but very beautiful and richly decorated church. On the exit you can step on the grave "The worst man G-d ever created" (Don Miguel Mañara who could be a prototype of famous Don Juan).
Make sure to find church opening hours since it is closed in the middle of the day. Allow less than 1 hour.

Iglesia de la Caridad is a nice little chapel but exquisitely decorated. The elaborate interior is just magnificent, and includes some amazing works of art by well known painters of the past. The church is run by some charitable institution and is connected to the Hospital of the same name. It's all about charity which is for a good cause. The visit to the church wouldn't take more than a few minutes.

Gorgeous 17th Century paintings by Murillo & others in original locations; this impressive church is part of an still-active 'Charity Hospital/Hospice' from 1647, today housing 70-100 needy men. Its sculpture and art are masterpieces...well worth a visit. NOTE: ask for the English recorded guide when paying your 5 Euro 'donation'; it sometimes isn't offered automatically ;)

This hospital is still working, it's run by a brotherhood who looks after the elderly that have no means, There are still about 80 such elderly living there. This place has made me love the painter Valdes Leal, which before I knew less than say Murillo or Zurbarán. There are especially two mystical paintings about matters of death, right at the entrance of the church, on the left and on the right walls, opposite each other, right after you have stepped on the grave of the Patron Don Miguel Mañara, as he has wished that every one should (except that his remains are no longer there the Hermandad has buried him in a more sacred way later on). Anyhow. The church is endless in what it has to offer, it's too much, but a too much that seems to bring forth a harmony after all. But all of this place is worthwhile studying. Even the architecture is ingenious, the hospital was built very quickly and efficiently on the arches of a former building, one can still see these in the walls of the old halls where the sick were lined up. Quite often, special visits are made where in small groups one can see and get explanations to rooms and baroque works that are not usually open to the public. Check it out.

Hospital de la Caridad (10 Euros for two) was an unexpected gem. It's a charity hospital that was founded in 1674 and still cares for the elderly poor. The chapel is filled with works by painters such as Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and Juan de Valdés Leal, and sculptors like Pedro Roldán and Bernardo Simón de Pineda. The patio is decorated with seven tiled panels of 1700 from Holland, representing scenes of the Old and New Testament.

Pleasant place do good charitable works but not much to see if time limited not really worth it. People still living and working there felt bit like an intruder into their lives. It is a charity so the fee helps support this good cause which is positive.

Around 1650, a quarter of Seville's population died in a plague. A decade later some of the survivors, members of the Brotherhood of the Holy Charity, worked to found a hospital to care for the sick poor. These were not timid men. Their fraternity had specialized in burying criminals who were executed, which must have required them to regularly attend the notoriously horrifying public executions of the era. But the experience of the plague obviously scared the crap out of them, and they responded by commissioning the finest artists available to make one of the best decorated small churches in the country (so says the guide and it may be true).

The first thing you see when you enter the church is an enormous, dark painting of death by Juan de Valdes Leal. It depicts a skeleton carrying a scythe and coffin beneath one arm, while with the other it snuffs out a candle below a Latin inscription "in ictu oculi" -- in the blink of any eye. A companion piece across the way shows the rotting bodies of a bishop and a knight, while in front a magnificently gilded altar depicts the placement of Christ in his tomb. Religious pictures by Murillo showing charity also line the walls.

An eerie but impressive experience. Takes very little time and 5 euros to see it.

The Hospital de la Caridad is still a religious charitable institution. It has a 5 euro entrance charge and is principally organised around a nice double courtyard. The main event here is the church that displays a number of paintings by the seventeenth century Spanish painter Bartolome Esteban Murillo. Four of these were taken by General Soult, one of Napoleon's generals and have been replaced by copies so that the general themes are still legible. The surviving originals by Murillo are in a different class of painting to the copies and it is really good to see them in the setting for which they were intended. Of the originals that were taken, one is in the Hermitage, another is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, a third is in the Canadian National Gallery in Ottawa and the fourth is in the National Gallery in London. The audio guides were not working well when we were there; the list we were handed said one thing but the numbers did not always correspond to the subject on the audio guide.
