Die Weimarer Fürstengruft auf dem Historischen Friedhof beherbergt neben den Begräbnisstätten der Fürstenfamilie des Hauses Sachsen-Weimar und Eisenach seit 1832 auch die Sarkophage der beiden größten Dichterpersönlichkeiten der Weimarer Klassik: Johann Wolfgang Goethe und Friedrich Schiller. Bereits seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich das Mausoleum zu einem frühen Verehrungsort für die Dichter. 2008 konnte im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojektes nachgewiesen werden, dass die Friedrich Schiller zugeschriebenen Relikte in Wahrheit von mehreren Personen stammen und nicht authentisch sind.

I cannot understand the glowing reviews here. The cemetery might be pretty enough in a dilapidated way, but the 'Gruft' is just ridiculous, and let me tell you why: Advertised as 'the tombs of Goethe and Schiller', they analysed the bones in Schiller's coffin five...More
