I think that we had walked past this place on numerous occasions but only noticed it when on an evening walking tour lead by the city dungeon keeper. He brought us to the gates of the old horses yard and shared some entertaining stories of an "olde worlde" gone by - not all of them suitable for kiddies :-)

Armed with his stories and a great imagination you can really picture what it might all have been like in the long and illustrious past of this wonderful city.

Attractive location among the royal stables, some hilarious exhibits (4 guys in a hot tub sipping gluhweine), vendors in traditional garb and a 5 piece Russian brass band playing holiday music and "show tunes"!!! What more could you want this time of year.

We visited this horse, gaming, hunting arena as part of our walking tour. We walked through it the day before on our own and with the guide understood much better, how this space was used. Very cool to imagine the jousting tournaments that took place here.

If you don't know it is there you'll walk straight past it. Walking through the gate you'd never guessed you just walked into a long rectangular medieval jousting arena. The two lanes are clearly marked. Along the walls of the courtyard are the original stables. On the other side of the long wall, along the Augustusstrasse you'll find the "Procession of Princes". The Stallhof is also the location of the Medieval Christmas Market.

Very close to my hotel so I could not unvoid to see this but as always its not all things under a travel and holiday You understand and know what is. I understand it when I come home because I saw some nice photo from this part of Dresden. In the heart of the city of Dresden, right inside the castle, very near the Frauenkirche and only a few metres from the Striezelmarkt you ll find the medieval Christmas market in the Stallhof. No marked when I was there but I can understand how beautiful it is in desember. In the Middle Ages, knightly games and tournaments took place in the Stallhof.

These are the old royal stables whose walls are adorned on the outside by the now famous procession of princes. Inside, an arcaded gallery looks upon a long courtyard. The first floor of the arcade is beautifully decorated with floral patterns.

In the old days, the courtyard was host to knightly and equestrian games. Now it is a venue for cultural events.

In the winter months, a medieval Christmas market is held here. The market takes you back in time with period costumes, old style stalls, medieval flags hanging from above and archery games and a brass band for entertainment. Be careful though, taking photos of some attractions (like people drinking in a hot tub) could cost you a Euro or two - but its still great fun.

Definitely a must see especially if during the Christmas season.

Brand new as the rest of the "old" Dresden but remarkably done. It only takes a few minutes to stroll in this court but it is nice crossing it if you are in town.

I was lucky to have a local bring me to this market. On weekends there is a cover charge, but it is free on the weekdays. It was smaller than the other markets I had gone to, however the atmosphere was wonderful and cozy. I really enjoyed the kasespaetzle (sort of like a german macaroni and cheese) and this freshly baked apple bread. They also have a bread filled with cheese which I did not try at this specific market but was absolutely delicious at another market (handbread/handbrot). Highly recommend going to check out this market, and right outside is the famous mural.

This lovely restored courtyard reminds you of the way life was all those many years ago. You can hear the horses and see the knights. To met this was more of an experience than something to see
