Was that 2 churches or 1 huge connected church? It turned out to be both. A close look at the floor plan also revealed that there were 12 supporting pillars, and I noticed that each of them had an apostle as well as an article of the Apostle's Creed painted on. All of these pillars and the paintings were completely... More

The church was built in 1235-60 and is one of the earliest examples of German Gothic architecture. It was lovely inside with its soaring ceilings and stained glass. It is located right next to the Dom. Be sure to see both of them.

The Liebfrauenkirche is, along with the Cathedral of Magdeburg the earliest Gothic church in Germany, build in the architectural tradition of the French Gothic cathedrals. It is located next to the Trier Dom. It is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with other Trier attractions. The church is build on the foundations of a previous Roman church (or... One of the top four or five sites to visit in Trier, and a wonderfully well-preserved. For Gothic architecture fans, this is a must-make pilgrimage, since its the oldest known gothic edifice in Germany, and of course ties in historically to the romanesque church foundations from an earlier era supporting it. Its non-standard cruciform layout and its relationship to the... More

The church has got modern stained glass windows who give a dramatic light inside. Very impressive is the glass pyramid in which one can see about three meters down to the ground levels of the 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 11th century!

Entering we realized that it is a central church which was a bit surprising and gave same interest to this building which probably suffered during WWII. New glass windows and paintings on the columns.

This is my favorite church. Linked to the massive cathedral next door it provides a very different, more personal and inspiring experience. The stained glass windows are modern and replace windows destroyed by allied bombing during the war. The morning light baths the interior in amazing colors. The ceiling is painted with beautiful floral motives. A great place for introspection... More

While the Dom (Cathedral) understandably gets a lot of attention the Liebfrauenkirche is a great place to visit. I arrived at closing time (18h00) but was fortunate enough to sneak in with a group of history buffs who were being given a guided tour of the church. I joined the group for a fascinating tour of this beautiful church. Another... More

This is actually two churches, both of which have interesting histories. They are attached, but are very different from each other.
