Interesting, but you need the audio guide

Whilst a free audio guide is included in the price (€4 for AntiqCard holders), it only translates for a minority of artifacts and art in the museum. Also, the arrangement of objects is somewhat haphazard, with medieval material and then modern interpretations all in one room as an example. The temporary exhibitions were of gingerbread houses and modern art, respectively,... More

Not a must, but still gives a good overview of ancient Trier. Due to the ongoing Nero exhibition I cant't tell much about what's normally shown.

We have been in the museum: an exhibition about the roman emperor Nero, seen through the ages in all kinds of media: literature, movie (remember Peter Ustinov ?) and opera. The rise and fall of the emperor. Next to it was the "normal" exhibition of the museum: unbelievably what they can teach us about the local history represented with so... More

Don't forget to ask for an audio guide an you will make the most of your visit. You can see the original market cross and the original statues of the baroque fountain in Market Square. Try not to be in hurry, so you can enjoy each of the different departments.

The museum provides a fascinating overview of the history of Trier. Good audio guide in German, English, French, or Dutch. Semi integrated with the Porta Nigra.

We had two hours to kill on a wet afternoon in Trier and chose to visit this museum. In fact it should be on most people's agenda: there are all sorts of interesting historic and artistic exhibits and a cinema with an equally interesting black and white twentieth century film collection, including some unpleasant and disturbing shots of Third Reich... This was a good little museum. The exhibits were historically interesting, and rather beautiful. It is always a good deal to buy the combination tickets for both the museum and the Porta Nigra. You'll save a little bit of money doing that.

I would rank this landmark as excellent for only one thing. The audio tour. It is far more than excellent that although the paintings are nice I was not that impressed having visited many museums in Paris and Vienna, but whoever designed the audio tour is a master professional.

The folks who put together this audio tour should give lessons to overseas museums. It offered thorough, in depth information on almost all the artifacts, instead of just a general overview of the gallery and perhaps one of two exhibits. A thoroughly wonderful musuem.
