I had visited the tower in the evening, as the guidtour "the devil in Trier" starts in this tower. Must say itts interior is great in the special "theatre light". I guess it will be open during daytime as well but I did not have the opportunity to go back. Next time. It was built 11th century as a residential tower, originally 5 floors high. Its name is derived from Franco of Senheim, who lived in the tower 14th century . In 1308 reduced by half.It also served as residential tower of the Ministry at the service of the Archbishop. Trier had 7 or 8 of such residential fortified towers, but only Franco’s Tower and the Jerusalem Tower have been preserved.

The usual medieval tower, in Trier there were about ten similar towers. It looks pretty unattractive, although located in the heart of the city. Don't forget that from the original five floors here remained only three. The tower was defensive and at the same time residential, in it were quartered the officials of the Archdiocese. It found the expression in the entrance to the building - it was high above the ground, and in order to enter residents used a wooden ladder, which, if necessary, cleaned.
Now it is a regular detail of the urban landscape in Trier, giving a touch of the medieval past to already modern city . Now the tower hosts a variety of concert and entertainment events, exhibitions, banquets and even scientific conferences.

The ‘Frankenturm’ - a tower house from the 11th century in the centre of Trier - is a very interesting sight because Germany has few of these tower houses. Trier is so lucky as to have another one, the Jerusalem Tower, close to the cathedral.
The Frankenturm doesn’t take its name from the German tribe of the Franks, as one might think, but from Knight Franco von Senheim, who lived in the tower in the 14th century, so it’s actually ‘Franco’s tower’. When it was built, the tower was 82 feet high.; now only 45 feet remain, but it’s still an impressive construction. Like elsewhere in Trier, part of the building material for the tower has been taken from available Roman buildings. The Frankenturm had few openings and no access at street level. Its entrance was high up and could be closed off in case of danger. The Romanesque windows in the tower are historic, but the front and back entrances and the steps are modern additions.
The Frankenturm has recently been restored and equipped with modern facilities, but it has not been turned into a museum. The interior can only be visited during special events or guided tours organised by the tourist office.
The address and the location of the Frankenturm on the TA map seem to be wrong. The tower is to be found in the Dietrichstrasse, off Hauptmarkt. Just turn the corner at the Steipe and the Red House and walk down Dietrichtstrasse for about 500 metres.

This tower has an ancient flavor being built in the 11 century as a residential tower. It is so close to the city center that a stroll in the old city can easily lead to it. It lost some of its height, but the remaining part is well retained. The interior is really nice.

Trier displays so many different stages of history. This medieval tower is close to the market square and can easily be visited. You can only see it from the outside but that is impressive enough. Worth a few minutes of your time

This is a very well preserved ancient tower, do some research as there is not much info on site and you can only view it from the outside. However its worth a look.
It's not easy to find so prepare beforehand.

A very impressive tower which can be easily missed if you don't look out for it. Unfortunately you can't get inside.
