Another very pleasant square in Koblenz. Its name is apparently from the fact that the square housed the old mint buildings from the 11th century. In the middle of the square is a far more modern fountain which dates from 1992.

We were here during in December and visited the Christmas Market on the square.
The Münzplatz is located in the old town of Koblenz, its name is reminiscent of the former electoral mint.
The coins of the Electors of Trier were minted in Koblenz with few interruptions from the middle of the 11th century. In the 15th century, Koblenz even became the main mint for the prince-bishop, replacing Trier.

Munzplatz is nice to visit during Advent Season as it hosts one of the larger Christmas markets in Koblenz. Take some extra time to find the bronze statues in the square.

The square is nicer than the fountain but it is a lovely square with flowers, old buildings and cafes.
Their is a story about the fountain.

You enter the square through an arch. Other than shops and restaurants there is not much in this square. Make sure that you see the little bronze statues of the Market woman and policeman though. They will make you smile. Also look out for the drummer boy
There is also an interesting looking fountain in this square which was donated to the public on occasion of the city's 2000th anniversary

On Munsplatz, our walking tour guide showed us the bronze statues of a seated market woman and a standing policeman. They are the main photo interest of this square along with an unusual modern looking fountain. The subject for the bronze figures have been appropriately chosen to represent the women who came to the daily market on this square to buy fresh fruit and vegetables in the market stalls (now only on Saturdays) and the police who worked in the station nearby. Both are dressed in clothing suitable for their time - 19th/early 20th century. The plaque suggests the woman is telling the policeman that a dog has peed on her basket of vegetables and she is tired. The bronze statues, almost life-size, are on a low concrete platform so it is possible to get a good look at the figures. This statue is one of several that can be seen in the old town.

The Metternich House at one end of the square - the white plastered house with red trim - has an interesting history. It belonged to the Metternich family since the mid 1600's and was the house where Clemens Wenzeslaus von Metternich was born in 1773. He became the Elector of Koblenz who built the Schloss Koblenz. Another building on the square close to the bronze statue was the coin master's house. Today it has exhibitions on one level, and, on another, it is a meeting place for girls and boys from age 12 and up to do activities. We didn't investigate. On the creamy facade of another building a fresco had been painted between 2 levels of windows. It showed a curious looking couple enjoying a moment around a central kitchen fireplace so it seemed we were getting a peak into the building's rooms and its occupants.

Munzplatz from 16th century on was the area where the Elector of Trier had built his coin minting buildings. Although these buildings have been destroyed, the square has retained its name. Munz means coin. Presently the pleasant looking square is ringed with multilevel residences with shops below. Patio cafes offer places for refreshment.

This city square is just a stone's throw from the Liebfrauenkirche. If in the area, detour to take photos of Munzplatz and the Stadtarchiv Alte Burg nearby on Peter Altmeier Ufer at the foot of Balduinbrucke.

Located around the old "coin pressing" Plaza where in the past centuries one of the Koblenz market for vegetables and fruits was located. Definitely a point to be remembered while visiting the city...

The Koblenz Munzplatz is a fun place to visit, especially when it is during Christmas Market season. Koblenz has five Christmas Markets and the one located at the Munzplatz is the biggest one.

Very beautiful German town. People are very friendly and most speak some English. There are many sights to see and I would recommend spending at least a week there to view them.

We visited the plaza at dusk and there were several street entertainers and lots of people watching them. In addition, there were lots of places to eat and drink.
