The Roman Catholic St. Lamberti Church was built in the period 1375-1525, a long construction period. Before 1375, another church stood on the site of the current church. The church is dedicated to Saint Lambert of Lüttich (635-705), who was born in Maastricht. The St. Lamberti Church is largely built with Baumberg sandstone and is considered one of the best examples of the Westphalian late Gothic architectural style. The exterior of the church is richly ornamented, very impressive. The exterior looks quite dirty, cleaning the facades will show a stunning refreshment of the sandstone. A striking feature of the church complex is the neo-Gothic church tower with a high, openwork spire. This tower was only built in the period 1880-1889 and replaced a much simpler tower, which had to be demolished due to dilapidation. There are three iron cages hanging from the tower. These are 16th century. In these cages attached to the (previous) tower and relocated in the 19th century, the bodies of three leaders of the so-called Anabaptists were exhibited. This aggressive religious sect briefly held Münster in its grip around 1535 and its main leader, Jan Beuckelszoon van Leyden, whose corpse also hung in a cage, even proclaimed himself king of the Anabaptist kingdom of Münster. The interior of the church is no less than the rich exterior. Definitely go see it... very beautiful pulpit, high stained glass windows behind the high altar, interesting, rather austere baptismal font, etc. The St. Lamberti Church was seriously damaged during WWII, but restored to its original state in the period 1946-1959. Beautiful church, outside and inside. How good would cleaning the facades be!

Not only a fine church but the cages in which the Anabaptists were hung can be seen clearly hanging from the spire.(though the original are in the museum).A beautiful atmosphere inside.

It's a really stunning church, and one you cannot miss when you're in the old town. A great landmark, and really worth a visit!

St. Lamberti Kirche is famous for its sculpture of Jesus without his fingers.
However, we found a heartbreaking sculpture of the recently dead son of God resting in his mother’s arms more appealing.
The church itself is worth a visit - but don’t expect miracles.

This is one impressive building - from the outside and the interior. The interior is rather matter of fact except for the huge main stained glass windows which are absolutely gorgeous. Very intriguing is the enormous pipe organ which is actually hanging from the ceiling (with a little stability from the sides). Outside, up on the spire are the three famous cages to be seen which remind us of older and much darker days. It’s certainly worth a visit.

From the tower of the old market church hang the three cages in which the bodies of Anabaptists were displayed in 1536 as a deterrent to others. This is a beautiful church with such historical significance in the midst of a beautiful cobbl stone market place. Truly a moving experience to contemplate.

This church is named after the first Bischop of Münster, Lambertus.
Like all other churches, it was almost wholly destroyed during the bombing campaign at the end of WW II, and rebuild from scratch.
During this bombing both arms of the Jezus figure on the cross were lost, a splinter of a bomb pierced the chest of Jezus where his heart would be, this damaged figure of Jezus now adorns a new wooden cross with the text "the only hands I have are yours", quite a story, even for a non believer like me.
The modern church is still quite beautiful.

I was curious about this church because of the spire with three cages at the top. Apparently after the Anabaptist revolt in the 14th century, dead bodies were displayed up there to deter other people who might want to fall foul of the authorities. Inside, the church is fairly average looking, nothing special. Recommended for its historical interest and good location.

The church looks amazing when viewed from beneath and stands right in between the shopping street. The 3 cages hanging at the top reminds us of the brutality that has undergone against the protestants in the previous centuries. Inside the church is equally brilliant and very peaceful.
