It's a nice part of Essen to spend a day outside town. Old houses, cubble stone streets. One can get there by U11 till Messe/Gruga and catch the bus 142. Good restaurants and nice walk along the river, good for biking or inline skating.

We visited because we had some time, but we could have regretted not doing it. We had an amazing stroll around the streets and lovely houses. Great views next to water. Old town is 7min walk from kettwig bahnof.

Essen has a lot of modern touches. The south of it, where Kettwig is allows you to see a more traditional german city, quite confortable and godo for a calm stroll.

Perhaps its the day I happened to be in Kettwig, I canoed along the river with a friend and arrived at the old town, the village has its charms that adds a certain filter to your memories of it.

You can reach Ketwig easily from Essen main station. A boat trip from Kettwig to Mülheim on the Ruhr is quite nice. There are a series of lakes (Sees) around Essen which are attractive.
