Enjoying a gluhwein in Marktplatz Christmas Market my eye was drew to the Jan Wellem Statue.
This is the oldest surviving statue in Dusseldorf, known as " The Rider " , the work of sculptor Gabriel De Grupello ,unveiled in 1711 this wonderful equestrian statue depicts Jan Wellem astride his trusty steed ,Jan Wellem himself was a much respected diplomat and under his guidance Dusseldorf as a city prospered, I love the fact that I can view this statue as during World War Two this city was devastated but this statue remained relatively unscathed, its a wonderful monument, one I highly recommend you check out if you're planning a holiday to Dusseldorf and easy to locate on Marktplatz.

I didn't jump up and down at the sight of it... but it can't be missed when having a nose around, visiting the old town hall.

I love nothing more than visiting the beautiful Christmas market held annually on Marktplatz and the centrepiece of this beautiful market square is the splendid equestrian statue of Jan Wellem .
This beautiful statue is the oldest statue in Dusseldorf, known as " The Rider " ,its actually one of the most important and relevant Baroque statues in Europe ,unveiled in 1711 by sculptor Gabriel De Grupello ,the statue shows Prince Jan Wellem astride his steed ,Jan Wellem was a well respected diplomate and under his leadership Dusseldorf prospered, miraculously the statue and many of the buildings that were constructed during his reign survived the brutal and continuous bombing of Dusseldorf during world war two.
It makes for some great photographic opportunities especially at night and especially during the festive season when it is beautiful illuminated.
Easy to locate on Marktplatz, without a shadow of a doubt Dusseldorf's most beautiful square and most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area.

This monument is the statue of Johann Wilhelm II, an Elector Palatine of Wittelsbach Dinasty.
The statue is situated in Marktplatz, in front of the Alte Rathaus.
It's a landmark of Dusseldorf, and worth to be seen, when you walk in Altstadt.

Like the name tells, the rider is Jan Wellem (local dialect) aka Johann Wilhelm (in German). Statue was completed 1711 so over 300 years it has been looking at Marktplatz. During Christmas period statue is surrounded by Christmas market, so you can barely see it.
Statue looks nicer with night lights.

Our last holiday of 2017 saw us in Dusseldorf over the Christmas period and a visit to Marktplatz to visit the beautiful Christmas market was a must go destination and you cannot fail to see the iconic Jan Wellem Reiterstandbild ( The Rider ).
This is Dusseldorf's oldest statue ,it's the most relevant Baroque statue in Europe and was sculptured by Gabriel De Grupello in 1711 of Prince Jan Wellem who was a renowned diplomat under whose guidance Dusseldorf prospered.
It's the centrepiece of the world famous Christmas market held in this square and is most definitely well worth checking out.

We saw this statue whilst in the old Market square of Düsseldorf. It was a little hidden by the Christmas market which was really busy but the rider rises above the market stalls.

Quite. Nice statue and sits well as part of the landscape of the old market square. Worth looking out for.

This is yet another place that is steeped in history, and easy to get to. If history, architecture are your thing, make this on your list for Dusseldorf.
