Although the cathedral is in the heart of old Cologne, it's only steps from the central train station. We went on a Sunday during service yet they were still gracious enough to let us in. Unlike many cathedrals nowadays (York Minster in England etc.), Cologne...More

Dom is first thing you will notice if you are coming to Cologne arriving at the central station(Hauptbahnof). It is grand, it is majestic and it is marvellous. You gotta see it for yourself. Visiting Cathedral is for free and it is recommended. There are...More

This really is a spectacular cathedral. It's enormous and has so many exquisite things to see. Choral vespers on a Sunday evening very good.

The magnificent structure leaves you in awe of the architecture... the only structure which survived the bombings in the world war is a must must see!!!

A very majestic building of the cathedral though it has become little black from outside. Inside the church , we lit a candle & my grandson prayed for me. It was very heart touching .

To see this cathedral from far is impresionate. To come closer and see all the detalis inside and outside this majestic building is just like the commercial: "one is just speechless"

This is one of the 4 great Gothic cathedrals. Stained glass is beautiful. Try to see the Cathedral on a sunny day as the light through the colored glass is fabulos.

Is there a hand railing for the spiral staircase? Are the mentioned "tight spaces" possibly a challenge for a 6ft 9 in. 65yr old man with some balance issue. I am a regular walker and many times have a very hills and valleys route. We do the Cathedral in mid-April 2017. thanks for the feedback!

Yes there is a rail which goes to the TOP. you can pause and rest where you can witness a big bell and the view from the top. As some one mentioned it is a long slog but worth it All the best.

we would like to visit the cathedral during our train trip from Koblenz to Brugge. We have to change trains in Cologne. How much time would it take to get off the train, use the luggage storage and tour the cathedral before our next train to Brussels?

Cologne Cathedral Staircase Question - how difficult are the steps to the Dom roof and how is the pace. We will be headed to Cologne with a Viking cruise and are interested. We are healthy and take day hikes in local parks, but want to make sure we don't hold up the line with the large number of steps - it seems so worth it though

The stairs are fairly steep and most of the way up is via a spiral staircase. It's fair to say it is quite a slog but eminently manageable. If you can, I would advise going first thing in the morning when fewer people are... More
