This is a beautiful old cemetery located somewhat near the town center of Bonn. We didn’t see a lot of tourists there, so it was quite peaceful. Many of the wealthier citizens of Bonn are buried here including the mother of Ludwig van Beethoven. Both Clara and Robert Schumann are buried here as well. Clara was one of the most famous pianists of her era and was a child prodigy. She married Robert Schumann who was famous in his own right as a composer. Most all of the grave sites are very well maintained by private citizens.

We don’t make a habit of visiting graveyards but are happy we made an exception for Alter Friedhof. It is a lovely, quiet spot in a bustling city, fairly well maintained for a very old spot (though folks are still being buried in the space). Redesigned in the 1800s, it was purposefully structured to join nature and art to create a harmonious, albeit melancholy, environment. Huge trees, monuments large and small, flowers of all sized and colors surround you as you walk.

What we thought would be a quick turn around the cemetery turned into more than two hours of exploration. Although noted German’s are buried within Alter Friedhoff (including Beethoven’s mother, August Wilhelm von Schlegel, Schiller’s wife Charlotte and his son Ernst, Adele Schopenhauer, August Wilhelm von Schlegel, Ernst Moritz Arndt, Barthold Georg Niebuhr and Karl Simrock) our favorite ‘famous’ burial site was for Robert and Clara Schumann, celebrated with a lovely large, white monument featuring musician cherubs.

The old cemetery may not appeal to all; it is a quiet, introspective space. If, however, you are interested in the past or in how families remember their ancestors in words and art, enjoy a lovely walk under mature trees and enjoy a variety of flowering plants, this is definitely worth a visit. We would return…

By the way, it is easy enough to find from the city center, and maybe a fifteen minute walk from there. Not much else exists in the area but for us the destination was worth it.

Not a great attraction in itself, I was here for paying a visit to the grave of Robert Schumann - who died near Bonn - and his wife Clara. The cemetery is totally central and can be reached with a short walk from Beethoven's house. It can be visited for free.

Beethoven's mother is burried here... watch out not to walk past it! Many other important/known people are burried here, with very nice and exquisite headstones.

I took the Saturday tour - which was almost canceled because not enough people showed up but another couple arrived just in time. The guide was very knowledgeable and pointed out details and their meanings that you wouldn't otherwise find out about. See the graves of Beethoven's mother, Clara and Robert Schumann, Schlegel and a few other "celebrities" as well as a 14th chapel that was moved stone by stone from the other side of the Rhine - in the 1800s!

my last morning in Bonn and it was raining. The graveyard was close to my hotel and it seemed like a good idea to do my "last walk" in Bonn there despite the rain. I wasn't the only early morning wanderer there either. We were two brave souls in the rain who met and chatted as well.
The graveyard is beautiful with beautiful old and new stones. It is very well kept as are all the graveyards in Germany. This was such a relaxing walk. I would really recommend it to anybody who want to get out of the town and just enjoy peace

A map at the cemetery shows the graves of two famous people: mother of Beethoven, Maria Magdalena Keverich at No.6 grave. A normal grave probably after renovation. No. 71 grave of Robert Schumann and his wife Clara, much bigger and beautiful grave with 2 angels and a woman figures. There are some other graves with nice grave-stones and constructions.

This is a lovely street to walk along. It is dotted with monuments. Bonn is flat so it's easy to walk around.

Old city cemetery in the center of Bonn. Very atmospheric, huge memorials. Beautiful statues, recalls a bygone era.
