The "Klenkes" is the little finger from your right hand and an international sign to recognize someone from Aachen. Aachen is well known for its needle factories and the needles are checked and sorted with your little finger. This is where this sign comes from

It's an imposant monument in bronze, with young peoples, it's a historic symbol of hard work and diligence : "No gain, without pain ",
probabily for busy students, or young hard worker.

Walking around Aachen is so very interesting. You must take your time otherwise you may miss one of the many statues. They are everywhere, they are all different, unique in their own way, and well worth a stare, a giggle, a photograph.

This statue shows “Klenkes”, how local people greet each other when they stretch out their pinkie, dating back to the needle industry, when bad needles were “ussjeklenkt” (taken out) by labourers by using their pinkie.

It's an interesting statue in a public area. Some nice looking eateries nearby and not far away from Marktplatz, Cathedral, Rathaus, etc.

This statue is another example of how Aachen keeps its history alive. If I haven't read about this statue I would not have known that there used to be a needle factory here and how needles were sorted.
Aachen is full of excellent statues and it is fun to wander around and see them everywhere
Really worth a stop and a few photos

A modern sculpture to honor an old industrial activity and sign language. Aachen used to be a center of needle production. Young workers (perhaps to be categorized as children by present day definition) used to remove defective needles with their little finger. Later raising the little finger became a way of greeting other people of Aachen, especially when meeting in areas outside Aachen. A symbol of recognition.

The historic centre of Aachen is filled with excellent bronzes, from Charlemagne to monsters. This is another interesting example in a prime location you'r bound to see as you stroll around. Having said that there are a number of others we preferred, including some which haven't made it to TripAdvisor. Someone in Aachen should organise a walking tour of all the excellent pieces of public art.

Surprising sculpture in an unexpected location. Very good to see though! I had to stop and study the figures.
