We were on a Baltic Cruise with NCL and our cruise ship docked at ROSTOCK Port. We wanted to explore both Rostock and Warnemunde on our own. At Rostock Port there is a bus stop a short way up the road from the exit to the port - bus number 45 to Lutten Klein rail station (bus terminates here) then the S Bahn to either Rostock or Warnemunde. Unfortunately we were there on a Saturday when the buses only run every hour so we opted to take the ship shuttle bus to Rostock ( at the exorbitant price of US dollars 19.99). This ran about every 15 minutes and dropped you off in the centre just opposite Marien Kirche. From here we walked to University Square where there is an Information Centre who gave us a map and general information. We saw the Rathaus, went into Marien Kirche (St Mary's), continued to Neu Markt Square where we stopped for an Iced Coffee. We then continued onto Alter Markt, Steintor and St Peters Church. We went into both Marien Kirche and St Peters Church which were both beautiful in their own way. All this was very walkable.
We then decided that we would like to go to Warnemunde by the Blaue Flotte boat (which takes about one hour). We walked back to Stadhafen and purchased a return ticket for 14 Euros. Could have taken a single for 10 euros and come back on the S Bahn. This was a very pleasant one hour journey and when we got off at Warnemunde there were three cruise ships docked there and we found the place completely overcrowded. We walked around this very pretty place with its canals, beach, lighthouse and of course the famous Teepott, and the Warnemunde Church. We then went onto one of the side roads to stop for a very nice seafood lunch.
The beach looked very nice but we felt they place was so overcrowded with the cruise ship passengers, we actually preferred Rostock.
The rail station is a few minutes walk from the cruise ships and the Blaue Flotte docks just next to the cruise ships.
We then took the boat back to Rostock and went to the store KTC where we bought some water and tonic water to take back to the ship.
We thoroughly enjoyed our day

There are two ports in the Warnemunde area, one of which is the Rostock port or Seehafen Fahre. We took a cruise with Pullmantur which was docked at the Rostock port. This port is the commercial port and the cruise terminal is in temporary buildings. It took me some time to figure out how to get there using public transit so I thought it would be useful to document this.
We stayed a few days in Berlin before coming to Rostock by the Regional Train. The journey from the Berlin Hauptbahnhof to the Rostock Hauptbahnhof, takes about 2.5 hours. There is an arrow in the Rostock Hbf, indicating where to catch Bus #49 that goes to Seehafen Fahre where the ship was docked. It cost about 2.10 euros and took about 40 minutes to get to the Port. After that It was about a 300 meter walk to get to where the ship was actually docked.

Having booked a tour of St Petersburg with SPB tours, we decided to use them also for our visit to Warnemunde/Rostock later in our cruise. Again, we could not have been more satisfied. Our guide, Manfred, was exemplary. Not only was his English superb but he arranged things so that we were in the great church in the hanseatic city of Rostock well before noon so that we could see and hear the great astronomical clock chime and see the figures of the apostles move. As with St Petersburg, the balance was well thought out with a walk around Warnemunde to begin with, then a train and tram ride to the centre of Rostock. With only four of us on the tour, there was plenty of opportunity for questions. Manfred was a fount of information about the history and present of the city. We also enjoyed the insights he offered of life in East Germany before reunification. After a pleasant lunch in a very German bar, we returned to Warnemunde by boat, arriving back just in time to get soaked on our way back to the ship! Altogether an excellent use of time and a most enjoyable day.

We docked at Wernemunde which is a lovely village and boarded the train to Rostock. An all day multi-use ticket was 6 euro each. This allows you to hop on and off the train and trams as often as you like. If you can read German you can buy your tickets from the vending machines but it is simpler to go to the kiosk and the lady there will issue them. The train takes about 20 minutes and you get off at Rostock Central Station, then go down two levels and follow the signs for trams. The tram will take you to the town centre square where there is a market and lovely old buildings. St Mary’s Church which is on the edge of the square was built in 13th century and spectacular to wander through. It is free entry and well worth a visit. Then wander down the adjacent street to see one of the 22 town gates and remaining section of the town wall. In this same area is the Museum and really very good.
Warnemunda was a good place spend a few hours wandering and check out the history.

When our cruise ship itinerary was changed from Warremunde to Rostock, I was disappointed as I thought it was just an industrial town but on getting to the town, Rostock as wonderful. The ship had free shuttle buses to town and we walked up to the Main Street. At the end of town we arrived at there is an interesting gate and tower. The walk through the main street shows lovely coloured buildings and a real ambience with good quality shops and eateries. Walk to the town square and you can catch a tram to train station, up two levels then train to Warremunde which itself is well worth a visit.
Rostock is usually used by cruise ships as that artist point to do a shore excursion to Berlin but it is about three hours each way by train and you only get about four hours in Berlin. My tip is spend today is Rostock and Warremunde. Far better day. Rostock also has a church has has a great astronomical clock which activates on the hour. It is elk worth a visit and you go slightly off the main street to see it..
With the tram and train ticket, friends knew of a 4.70 Euro ticket for a day pass but we discovered five people could get a day pass for 14.70Euro. You can get theses tickets from the tourist information office in the middle of town or fro. A ticket machine in the town square where the trams run through. We were lucky and asked a young German girl for help and she did the transaction for us on ticket machine.

We stayed in Berlin for 3 days before going to Rostock/Warnemunde port to meet our cruise ship. Our ship was berthed for most of our first day there. Some folks took tours, some took train to Berlin(I think 3 hour train ride oneway!) and others walked around the Villages and shopped and stopped to eat. Lots to see and do in Rostock & Warnemunde.

We were supposed to go to the resort port, but we ended up at the commercial port. Instead of having train access to the town of Rostock, we ended up having to take buses. Where we docked was a place where they were transporting wood products and the ferries were also nearby.

From the port, you can easily go to Rostock from Wernamunde station. You can buy a day pass and have an unlimited access to the train. Rostock is only about 20 minutes by train. You can spend your few hours going around the old town. Don’t miss the walls and the tower

Lots of eateries and shops near by. Beautiful homes and shops with Old World charm. We were there on a holiday (Man's Day). Lots of partying and drinking and the people were friendly and charming. We did not see any fights or problems. Lots of police presents, but even the cops were friendly and interacting with the public. You can buy seafood fresh off the boat and some boats are set up to cook your seafood.

Hi - we will be cruising and our port is Rostock - how do we get into town? Do we need to book a tour from the cruise or are there shuttles? How far is the town from the port itself? Thanks much!
Written 20 March 2019
Sorry for the late reply as I’ve been traveling for the last 2 months. No need to book a tour. The port is at Warnemunde which is walking distance from the pier. Rostock is just a 15 minutes train ride from the port. You can buy a return trip ticket from the station.
