Went on a cruise-ship excursion from Warnemunde (Port of Rostock). The morning shore excursion was great - over to the university town of Rostock by tour boat up the river/estuary and back by bus. The medieval church and its astronomical clock were amazing (survived World War II) and the remains of the medieval city wall as a Hanseatic trading town were fascinating. I also was able to observe the remnants of post-war German reconstruction in a city in the former East Germany with first-hand commentary from the tour guide who grew up in the area under the Communist regime.

A highlight of our visit to Rostock, was going into this cathedral at noon and seeing the clock in its daily action with a procession of apostles.

The church itself is fine and some interesting history, but not something particularly unique. However, the astronomical clock is amazing, other contributors have documented so, there is not much to add other than some pictures. Very worthwhile visit.

A fine church without much restoration. Impressive organ. The astronomical clock is very fine, well-maintained. A peaceful place, worth seeing.

Interesting church. We got there right after some concert when parishioners were leaving and had some 15 minutes to wander around until they closed it.

We saw many lovely buildings whilst walking around Rostock. And St Mary’s church was a great example of one.

This is a very beautiful brick (Backstein) church, located within a short walk from the City Hall.
The main attraction is the astronomical clock, which can be seen behind the main altar. It dates from 1472 and is very well preserved.

We travelled independently to Rostock from our cruise ship instead of taking the cruise line's excursion to Berlin. The Warnemunde train station is a 10 min walk from the cruise terminal and day tickets by S-Bahn cost 6 Euro each. The train takes 21 mins to Rostock Hauptbahnhof and you can either walk to the city centre or take the tram, which is covered by the day ticket, we opted to walk one way.
Our primary reason to visit Rostock was to see the Astronomical Clock dating back to 1472, amazing piece of engineering with the original clockworks, precision workmanship that works today after more than 5 centuries. The clock is wound everyday! Being a Sunday, most of the city was closed. We however walked the lovely streets & had a light lunch as well.

We had spent a pleasant Saturday afternoon exploring Rostock’s central town area, while our cruise ship was docked in the port of Rostock.
By late afternoon, we had completed our shopping activities in the town’s main retail precinct and had begun to take in some of the sights. This was when we came across this impressive huge church, situated just off the main town’s square.
Because of its immense size, the church’s splendid architecture is best viewed from some distance so that you can take in all of the elements of the exterior of the elegant church building.
At the time of our visit, the church was not open for visitors. However, we were able to stand at the main doorway and take a look at the ornate and beautifully decorated interior which was as impressive as its exterior.
Certainly a “must visit” attraction for any tourist spending time in Rostock!

Every hour it chimes and at 12 noon, the parts moved. Right behind the altar.

Gigantic organ, beautiful stained glasses.

A must when in Rostock.
