About
Frankfurt has one of the oldest and largest Christmas Markets in Germany that has been running since 1393. It is a traditional winter market full of festivities, with Christmas carols and church bells ringing, and of course the giant Christmas tree, located in the scenic old town centre, decorated with thousands of lights, ribbons and bells. The market attracts more than 3-million visitors per year with more than 200 stalls to keep them busy. Many of the stalls sell classic wooden toys, rocking horses, dolls and decorations; others focus on delicious Christmas specialities like mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, grilled sausages and gingerbread, filling the air with wonderful yuletide aromas. Don't miss out on the historical merry-go-round, lit up and decorated with wooden carved horses. It starts at the end of November and carries on through December.

What a great market. We really enjoyed the food, booths, setting, etc. I highly recommend going if you are able to. We only went to the market in the old part.

The area is too crowded! Most places to eat were just sandwiches. The booths were decorated nicely but as soon as you got away from the central area there was nothing! The people of Frankfurt are very "mad at the world". They don't smile or talk nicely to anyone - in fact they won't even look at you! They act like you are an animal they want to avoid. I would NEVER go back to Frankfurt for anything FUN - they have no idea what that means.

Visited over 30 Christmas markets on a recent trip to Germany and Austria and this one was the best. This market had the most Christmas atmosphere, the best food options, and a huge variety of booths and entertainment. The market was located just a few blocks from the train station, about a 15-20 minute walk. Once you get to the market there are a few city train stations right at the market that will whisk you back to the main train station. Expect to pay about 10-12 euros for the ride. There are plenty of machines happy to take your money at the city stations (cash, credit, etc.). Everyone at the market was friendly and having a lot of fun. The sausages were great and there were probably about 20 different varieties offered. The market just goes on and on and it takes a long time to find the end of the market. It must be quite a task to organize the whole market and get everyone set up and ready for the crowds (and, yet, there were huge crowds!). If you enjoy Christmas markets, then this one is a must-see.

I literally felt like a little kid again walking along all the streets filled with stands and stores decorated for Christmas, selling sweets and yummy food. It was a magical experience and actually kind of cozy in a way, although that might have been the apfelwein.

We flew to Frankfurt in December, stayed in the city and visited the Christmas market. Frankfurt has an excellent one. It is huge! It winds its way through the old part of the city. It has features other markets do not. At certain times in the early evening trumpeters appear on the roofline of a Church and play music. It is magical. The foods include sausages, crepes, glugwein, potato pancakes and lots of confectionary.
There is a drawback. You need a plan for exploring. Since it’s a pedestrian only zone for the most part, finding a cab when you are done is really, really tough. We were lucky.

Lovely Christmas market spread throughout the city but gets very busy at night so avoid central parts in the evening or go earlier in the day. Lots of food and drink options and a few rides for children.

Wow. So much to see and taste. Everyone so friendly. Tried waffles with cinnamon and had hot chocolate to drink. 5 stars for that. Bought some candy as well. Yummy.

I love the Christmas market, but I was shocked at today’s experience with one of the stands that sells potato pancakes. We asked for 2 portions to take away, but when I grabbed a little paper bag to put the paper tray in, the lady growled at me saying that this wasn’t a self service and I should have asked for it (even if they were lying around like serviettes). I apologised but she wouldn’t have it, she was so rude! My mum offered to pay for the bag, but she shouted ‘that’s not the point!’ - so what was her point, I wonder? Wouldn’t go back if my life depended on it.

Hi.. Do we need antigen or PCR certs to get in the Christmas markets in Frankfurt? Or Digital Covid certs will suffice? Thanks a million.

Will there be any Christmas markets open or any holiday festivities from 12/26-1/2?
What other Christmas markets in Germany would you recommend? I read the one about Frankfurt.

Hi
I am planning to be in Frankfurt with my family, reaching there by 23rd for 5 days. Want to spend time around Frankfurt and experience the Christmas Market there. Is it the right time to visit since I also read post 24th the city and surrounding will be almost silent as most of the people will be celebrating Christmas at their home there

Assuming you mean 23rd Dec, Frankfurt (or any other city in EU) will be dull during that time. To the extent I know, Frankfurt Christmas market is till 22-Dec this year. 24 and 25 Dec will definitely be empty city, everyone indoor. Things will pick up from 26th again. You will also be greeted with cold and (if not super lucky) wet weather.... very short day length... Personally I prefer out of Europe during this time of year...

I'm not sure but I doubt it since St Nicholas arrives on December 6 and the Christmas Markets are all about the Christkind. I've never seen one there but then I wasn't looking for a Father Christmas.
