THE hauptfriedhof was just across the street from our hotel so we said we would have a look and was very surprised the Main building was riddled with bullet holes and the grave yard was strangely beautiful walking around it was so peacefully but we kept thinking about the bullet holes and some of the poor souls that died there probably never left if you are in Frankfurt and have some time have a look and say a prayer for them.

If you love old cemeteries, this is perfect for you. We had very limited time, but still enjoyed walking around snapping pictures. The headstones were very neat. Some have split and are leaning on the bases, so that made for some good pictures. It's lush and green and beautiful in there. I would recommend more than an hour for this place.

If you like cementaries, this one is good.
Huge, with some fancy graves. Peaceful.
It's located not far away from the city centre.

You can visit anytime, which would be a three star attraction....visiting with a tour in September, when the have the "Tag des Friedhofs" is really worth four or maybe five stars. Lots of the mausoleums are locked the other 364 days but on this day you can visit and see the inside of these elegant structures which house the tomb of, for example, the mistress (and later second wife) of Wilhelm, the Prince of Hessen. Lots of these structures are excellent examples of the various architectural styles of the last two centuries, and there are lots of famous people buried there as well (including a monument to the Hindenburg).

Rating a cemetery sounds a bit weird. ;-) But I like to visit them when travelling abroad. The Frankfurter Hauptfriedhof actually looks more like a park. Never seen a cemetery that green, that forested. Elsewhere tropical sun, white gravestones and a lack of trees burn and dazzle often my eyes. But here, this wasn't the case at all. The memorial for the victims of both world wars is impressive and produces a very special sound effect when I entered the round monument. Another memorial worth looking for is the one for the victims of the Hindenburg LZ 129 disaster in Lakehurst.

This cemetery is just beautiful and relatively big so you can walk around a lot while enjoying the nature, the tombstones and family mausoleums as well as really beautiful sculptures. Also, there are memorials for the victims of WWI, WWII as well as for the people that died in the Hindenburg. If you want to be able to think and let your thoughts wander a bit while walking without any big noise around you...this is the place to go to do as it is basically a "peace oasis" in the otherwise loud city.

I visited Hauptfriedhof on a Monday afternoon when everything else was closed. The cemetery is huge, and there's lots of monuments and memorials to explore. I really enjoyed walking along the overgrown pathways and looking at all of the old tombstones. I suppose it's a little macabre to review a cemetery, but this is a peaceful and serene place to visit if you're ever in the Frankfort area.

I happened to visit here on a wet, rainy, misty, foggy day and it was a perfect setting. I slushed through the muddy grounds and could see some of the huge headstones and markers peeking through the thick fog. I could hear voices of other visitors in the foggy distance which increased the eeriness of my visit. I would certainly recommend visiting under these same weather conditions.

The Frankfurt main cemetery is a very most beautiful place and probably the largest city parks with huge trees and large open spaces.
Memorial for the victims of both world wars is impressive and produces a very special effect when I entered the monument.

It took me a few minutes to find it, got off at the wrong stop silly me, but once I did i was amazed. It looks larger on a map, so I thought that I wouldn't be able to make my way around the whole thing, but was pleasantly surprised that there was so much to see, but you were never far from an exit
