From sides the building looks like newly reconstructed. The most picturesque side from front. The day we visited was Star Wars premiere.

The Alte Oper at Opernplatz in Frankfurt am Main is a concert and event house. All kinds of events take place (see their homepage for actaul events)
However, in addition to the events inside, a beautiful building from the outside.
Many nice little cafes on the Opera Square invite you for coffee or tea.

Easy to go there, in the middle of the city. Just enjoy the sun in summer and have a drink. The building also looks very beautiful in the evening when it is illuminated. Definitely one of the few buildings in Frankfurt that is definitely worth it!
The European Central Bank is very close, and the banks of the Main are also not far away

The Opera house is centrally placed in the City and therefore walkable from our hotel which was a bonus. Modern with excellent sight lines and comfortable seating, the acoustics within the building were also impressive. The presentation, both on stage and front of house, was of a very high standard and we would certainly visit again on our next trip to Frankfurt. Altogether a memorable last evening in the City before we moved on to Paris.

Its a small Opera house but a wonderful place to spend an evening in Frankfurt. Be aware there is an Old and New Opera in Frankfurt only about a mile apart so make sure you know the one you are heading to when you tell the driver.
Cheers

I found the production excellent , good voices, nice direction by Micheletti, great conductor :Sebastian Weigle and an intersting libretto written by the composer . It was a successful debut of a great career , interupted by the Nazis.I apreciated the enthusiasm of the public and the rich orchestration of the opera , even the scenography !

I only knew about the free transit after I read through the reviews. It’s part of my print at home ticket but my German is not amazing so I didn’t notice it. It says RMV which is Rhein Main Verkehr, a regional designation, so I can’t confirm how far it goes but it does say valid from five hours before the show and until closing after.
Now, about the theater. I experimented with cheap seats, which I’ll avoid in future. Third balcony front row, side had great audio, but if you sit back in your chair, you can only see about .25 of the stage. You can lean forward to see the whole thing, but I felt like I was blocking my neighbor. Too much logistics stress that distracted me from fully enjoying the opera. I was impressed with the modern staging of Dalibor and the superb singing. I found the acting to be spot on and realistic, not overdone.
The opera house isn’t much to look at but it was comfortable and an easy flow into and out of the theater. I’ll be back.

We have never been to the Opera. Never been anywhere, so Frankfurt was our first.

It wasn't cheap, but compared to a London West-End show it was cheap. We selected our performance carefully so it included English sur-titles (which may or may not have been a mistake). We could have chosen some without and some with only German.

We went to see Xerxes by G.F. Handel. This was chosen as I simply love the Baroque musical style and Handel in particular. The orchestra were using many Baroque instruments in a performance that was authentic magical and of the highest musical standard. You could not have had a better rendition of any work by Handel.

The staging was modern and very imaginative and intellectual. In many cases, perhaps, it might have just gone way over some peoples heads with its allusions, allegories and references to issues in the modern world outside of the auditorium.

For those who know English Pantomime it was a treat. We had King Xerxes played by a woman, but then a principal female also dressed as a man for much of the drama! Then the brother of the King is a Counter Tenor and the King is sung Contralto.

One of the most memorable arias by Xerxes is his love for a tree. A tree, just like the ones that line the avenues of Frankfurt outside the very Opera Halle. In Frankfurt, a green city, a european city of trees. Not satirical, just very moving and skillful artistry.

As I said, some might hate it. A modern production in a modern building. Not beautiful but capable. Not much guidance to visitors; you have to find your own way around, but we coped.

Now the sur-titles: This may have been a mistake as my wife just hated the singing libretto. Loved the music, loved the quality of the singing, but made the mistake of trying to follow the song words Big mistake. Do what Julia Roberts did in "Pretty Woman". Just let the passion and beauty of the performance speak to you. It did speak to me. Who cares that it wasn't Covent Garden or Glyndebourne. I could afford this, even with the travel to Frankfurt to see it.

Hansel and Gretel at Oper Frankfurt was very well-done. The singers were fantastic, the costumes and set design spot-on, even the writing was better than I anticipated it would be (and thank you, Oper, for putting up "subtitles" on the screen above the stage so that we non-German speakers could have some idea of what was being sung).

The negative, though, was the seating. I didn't realize the theater wrapped around SO much, so those of us on the sides had to sit awkwardly, lean out awkwardly, just be awkward all around, just to see "most of" the stage.

This is one theater where it definitely pays to, ahem, pay a little more for better seats.
