That said, if your connection time is at least 5 hours, it is worth going to downtown! I was able to do all the walking and shopping in just 90 minutes, combined with the train to and back, it ate 3 hours max of my layover time. Leaving you plenty of time to get back to the airport. This downtown is a very historic centre and is pretty iconic for Germany. Downtown Frankfurt may not have a large old city vibe like Munich, but for a layover city, seeing it is enough to squeeze in a bit of Germany in your onward travels to your destination.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 26 November 2023

Enough space to walk around with an umbrella. There was a carousel at the middle of the— I regret not taking a photo becoz my hands are full. But was able to take photos in other spots. Very nice experience and memory!! Oh, and it’s conveniently close to the train station, too!!Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 29 November 2023

The Christmas market was spread out and had several different sections. We tried many different foods/drinks and looked at different Christmas gifts. Highly recommend at Christmas time.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 20 December 2023

Have a wander, take photos, visit the cathedral and enjoy the ambience. You don’t need to join a tour as they are all wandering around and you can listen in. After a bite take a quick walk to river and feed the geese with the left over bread not more than 100m across the road. Great activity for families with kids. A short walk along the river find a wonderful playground.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 April 2024

We enjoyed people watching here, the street performers and the many places to eat or have a drink. We also shopped and visited the beautiful churches.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 May 2024

While the rest of the city looks like any modern city, this small section of town has some beautiful colorful Tudor buildings and chapels. The river front is right here as well. Worth a visit.

Iconic square in the old city of Frankfurt that reminds me of German fairy tales. As a child, I have read the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin in an illustrated book for kids where the rats infested streets of Hamelin were looking just like Romerberg Platz in Frankfurt.
Nowadays, the square is invaded mainly by tourists, however it's nice to hang around here over a beer, a sausage and a pretzel, watching the people passing by.

This Roman square is the quintessential and classic view of Germany for me.
Sites of some Roman ruins nearby. Cute little shops and kiosks for food and drinks.
This is where you can find the true Tudor style buildings in its original design and form. Much more detailed and classier then the basic cookie cutter styles back in the states, but we try to emulate the best we can. Would like this design back in MI. Why not.

This is a quintessential Frankfurt site. With the Town Hall on one side, the Justitia Fountain in the middle, the Saint Nicholas Church and the reconstruction of a row of buildings (Ostzeile) on the other side, it represents a lot to the locals. It is also located very close to the Main River and the new Old City, is the arrival point of Iron Man sport competitions and the place where the Christmas Tree stands and the Christmas market takes place.

The Römer is located opposite the Old St. Nicholas church and has been the city hall of Frankfurt for over 600 years. Many famous soccer players and Germans have been recognized in these great halls. I saw evidence of a wedding party so perhaps people use the space for weddings. If you are allowed visit the interior, its beautiful. You will see paintings of every leader from the Kaisersaal, also known as the Emperor Hall. All the paintings are on the second floor and is a major tourist attraction. This was not crowded and took about 20 min to see. There was an art show in one section of the building but we chose to skip this. The architecture is Medieval. I believe from 1422. After our self guided tour we walked around the shops and found a cafe to enjoy cake and the tourist delights.

The Romer building is set in the Dom Romer square and is a breathtaking sight. It has three parts to the building with the central one the main looker. It has three large oval topped doors, a balcony, beautiful figurines, gold leaf designs, a clock with coat of arms to it's facade and a steeple to it's peak.

Frankfurt seems to have a lot of modern buildings mixed in especially right in the city centre , this part however has a lot of olde world charm . The actual Römer building had just been used for a number of weddings on the day we visited . Yes there are some tacky souvenir shops but in the main the area is quite charming with some lovely architecture . There is a large square with fountains etc . A large church / cathedral . Which I didn’t go into as I believe places of worship should be free to tourists as well as locals and revenue accrued should be by donation ( just a personal thing ) I’m sure I was very impressive inside . There is an impressive statue of Fredrick stoltze in one of small squares . Definetly a place / area to visit when in Frankfurt .

Do not be fooled!
It is a fake, tasteless reconstruction or replica of an old town. Germany has turned many city centres into a Disneyland style environment.
Not different from the Chinese replicas of European cities. And even China has banned those.

Our first introduction to German architecture, the buildings in this Square project a stately grandeur. There was a fayre going on when we visited. Walk the path right by the river which runs for miles and affords nice views of the city.

パリ→中央駅→空港で、フランクフルト滞在はわずか4時間です。中央駅から近くの見どころ駅近&食事を楽しむのであればレーマー広場でしょうか?
Written 11 February 2019

buon viaggio

Is there an App I can for the transport system collectively as we will be traveling to Konigstein at the end of November. I Cannot understand the train system out of the city. Is there a National Bus System from Konigstein to Frankfurt City or Airport? The Shuttle/Taxi services are WAY TOO EXP! T.I.A X
Written 1 September 2018
Hi Therese,
Well, there's an App you should use when using the public transportation system in Frankfurt and all neighboring cities.
Check for the RMV App - Rhein Main Vekehrsverbund - if possible, it's the Rhein Main Metro Service App and it includes Kőnigstein as well. I said possible because it depends e.g. on the App Store your using. RMV App can only be found in the German App Store and it is avail in English as well. You might as well have to switch stores once to download RMV App.
If all goes wrong, use the "DB-Navigator" App of the "Deutsche Bahn" which is the
the national transportation service but it will only show you all long-distance connections and some local connections, depending on the city you travel to.
For you to travel from/to Königstein and Frankfurt International Airport, you need to take the " Taunus-Bahn" shuttle service. It'll take you from Königstein Station to Frankfurt Central Station, and vice versa, from where you have to switch trains and take the subway, either S8 or S9 calling Frankfurt Airport. Quite convenient, not too expensive, 4,90Euro/person and all together a 1 hour ride.

Boa viagem .

what is the bussiness hour of souvenir shops that sells fridge magnets, key chain (typical souvenir) ?
Written 17 May 2017
Hi Iitata, I found that tourist attraction places (like Heildberg) have souvenirs type places. In Frankfurt, I went to the main train station and they had a good general souvenir shop that sold beer steins (musical ones too) and general pens and key rings. Its not that easy to find general things unless its a market or a tourist place. I had trouble getting a beer stein as the locals don't seem to rate them. They are not cheap and mine cost nearly E38 but can go from E49 upwards for traditional looking ones. Have fun!!
