Outstanding collection of international paintings from the 1400s to present
Truly outstanding, encyclopedic collection of paintings from across Europe from the 1400s to the present. Well organized. Ample information in English on each painting’s wall label. Very easy to get to, just across a pedestrian bridge over the Main River.

    Excellent museum that isn't overwhelming
The museum has a wonderful collection of Old Masters on the top floor. Start there. After you see the giant Rembrandt, the intimate Vermeer and the marvelous Botticelli portrait, go down a flight to see the 19th and 20th century collection where you will find masterpieces by early modern favorite artists. The collection is solid and interesting, and you won't feel like you have museum legs when you are done. You must check your bag in a locker--bring a 1 or 2 euro coin which will be returned to you when you leave.

    Truly wonderful museum
This museum really wowed me in terms of the quantity of world-famous paintings and the very doable size of the exhibitions. Lots of paintings for your money and not too much wear and tear on the legs! I was astounded at the beauty of many of the paintings which up until now I have only ever seen in books. I normally prefer modern art museums but this collection just blew me away. A perfect way to spend a couple of hours. Entrance €16 during the week and €18 at weekends. Plaques all in English as well as German. Not to be missed!

    Great collection
A visit to Frankfurt would be incomplete without a visit to the Staedel. I had ample time to visit the Old Masters collection, where I was pleased to find Vermeer's Geographer back in his accustomed location, and the modern collection with its fine late 19th and early 20th century paintings. I also visited the special exhibition of recent sculptures and related works of art. A most enjoyable afternoon!

Fabulous presentation of art. Many of the old masters I studied at OSU in Oklahoma, are displayed here. Seeing these originals signed and protected, was an amazing experience. Fully staffed for security and most speak several languages As I heard at least 5 different languages as patrons asked questions about certain items or paintings. And they have a great souvenir shop, get something to take home...please.

A great museum to spend an afternoon
Incredible museum to spend a few hours in. We started on the top floor with the masters and moved to the basement with the modern art superstars. The museum is clean and orderly and we were able to move about freely even though it was a busy day.

    Holbein in his prime.
The Holbein und die Renaissance im Norden art gallery is in residence from the 2nd November 2023 to 18 February 2024. Cost is 18 Euros and no reductions for seniors but Tuesday is a reduced entry day. The very best artist are on display going back for 500 years. If you only have a passing interest in art then this is the place to get an education. Well worth a 3 hour visit on a winter's day. Audio guides are available for the seriously minded. Lockers cost 1 Euro to deposit your belongings. Quality cafe on site to enable a break.

    Stadel museum
My wife and I visited this museum in March 2024. Entrance was free. There were various and beautiful paintings in the museum that we enjoyed. On the lower floor, there was a museum named Kollwitz, which dealt with the problems of the Jews during World War II.

Magical day ended with rude customer service at the souvenir shop
Magical day ended with rude customer service at the souvenir shop: After a private group tour, lunch at the museum restaurant, and solo wandering, I was so excited about some of the art that I decided to buy some souvenirs at the museum shop. I was buying 9 paper items (not postcards) on a very rainy day. I inquired if the shop has plastic bags and, when I saw the bags had the museum name, I briefly considered giving my friends the items in these bags as well. One of the shop clerks was suspicious and unfriendly from the start, questioning me rather unpleasantly and, in the end, pushing/throwing 3 bags, that I paid a euro per bag for, toward me, displeased and annoyed, ignoring my warm „Danke“. Germany is doing an amazing job of valuing art, yet it cannot stop its rude customer service problem. I am writing in hope that the museum administration might read and care to provide a more pleasant customer experience.
Thanks for your visit and your feedback! The behaviour of the shop assistant is not in line with our code of conduct for staff and we apologise for this incident. As we value courteous and helpful behaviour from our staff, you are welcome to report the incident to "besucherdienst(a)staedelmuseum.de" so that we can take direct action.

    Beautiful artwork
A beautiful collection of paintings from all types of artistic genres. We spent a couple of hours just wandering and enjoying all the art. Be sure and walk up to the rooftop for a glorious view of the city. Nice way to spent part of your day in Frankfurt.
