The house of Goethe lies in a cobbled back street off of a main road and has five split levels to it's facade with the first being terracotta and the rest yellow. It looks an older style building with no less than twenty seven windows to it's front facial design. It was nice to see but I was not interested enough to visit inside.

A wonderful visit to the past with just the right amount of historic information provided for the visual treats found here. The pride and beauty of the workmanship in the furniture was worth the visit. Everything else was icing on the cake.

The house has been lovingly restored and maintained, giving you a sense of how the great man lived, worked and loved. The 4 floors are furnished sparingly yet with elegance and simplicity. A stove in every room gives you a sense of post-medieval Germany. An iconic kitchen, small beautiful garden.

This is Germany's answer to Shakespeare. If you like history then learn a little of the background. 10 Euros entry fee with no reduction for seniors. Plenty of stairs so not really suitable for the infirm with even more stairs for the adjoining museum of fairy stories and associated fables. Good to spend 3 hours on a rainy day which it was when I visited.

Even if this had not been Goethe’s birthplace it would be worth seeing as a house museum. Of course it is a post WWII reconstruction, but very interesting nevertheless. There are three full floors of rooms and Goethe memorabilia to see. Very well presented and there are guide cards available in multiple languages including English.

We took a tour of the Goethe House and other places in Frankfurt. The house was completely destroyed in the war, but you can't see it. Simply brilliant. Inside you can also imagine how the Goethe family and their staff lived.
Everything was very well done and very entertaining. Highly recommended!!!!

I was only in Frankfurt to catch a plane, but looked for something to do the day before. This turned out to be an interesting visit. Admittedly, I am not well-versed about Goethe, but know the basics. Honestly, if this had been Hans the baker's preserved house it would have been just as cool to visit. The architecture was comely, the furnishings were alternately elegant and over the top. There is a lovely garden with an immense fig tree. The still-green figs were as big as my fist! I'd have loved to have gotten a ripe one.
Upstairs is a whole art museum. I didn't even see the entire thing. The staircase to access it reminded me of a Fritz Lang movie. If you go, you'll see what I mean.
It was certainly worth the visit.

Whilst some will have great knowledge, we, like many, knew little of the story of Goethe other than the Faust and Werther legends through Opera productions. The visit therefore opened our eyes to both the personal history of the family and the social conditions and life in Frankfurt at the time. We spent several hours in the building, indeed a number of groups followed and passed us during our stay. Even then, I am sure there was much that we missed and we would return on a further visit to the City.

If you like historical houses, this is the closest you are likely to get to one in Frankfurt. Because most of the buildings in Frankfurt were destroyed or gutted during the war, most of the historical buildings have been heavily rebuilt, and the Goethe House is one of them. After the war, all that remained was one wall and four of the stairs, and the current Goethe House was reconstructed in the late 1940s.
Despite this, it is an excellent place to visit and the house has been very convincingly rebuilt to the original specifications, right down to creaky floorboards and antique wallpaper. Fortunately, most of the furniture is original as it was put into storage during the war.
Entry is 7 Euros, half price if you have a Frankfurt card. This is good value, as the house has four floors which are all open to the public, there is a garden and courtyard, and the price includes entry to an adjoining art gallery.
It was a very interesting place to visit, and should appeal to most people who enjoy heritage buildings.

Even if you're not interested in Goethe, it's cool to visit this house for a look at upper class German life in the 18th century. The 4-floor house is kept in really good condition and basically as it was when Goethe lived there. But the best thing about this place, and I haven't seen any other reviews mention this, is the audio guide - the best I've ever used, which is pretty odd considering that this is not some kind of major attraction. It's an interactive touchscreen with overviews of all the rooms, and individual bits about various pieces of furniture, books, paintings, etc. You can design your own tour and learn (or not learn) about practically everything in the house. I've used audio guides all over the world and this is definitely the best, it really makes the house so much more interesting. Other museums should take a note!

I'm trying to visit on a tight layover - is there typically a line on Sunday mornings? Do you need to arrive much before it opens to get in right when it opens? Thanks!!
Written 3 April 2019
No) They don't have a trafik before opening. So I think it's not necessary to come earlier

I read somewhere that it was recently under renovation. Has the construction been completed, yet?

Our group will be touring Hessenpark on the day before we fly back to the states. What might be the easiest way to get from there to visit the house?
Written 16 May 2018
It's a bit complicated without car/tour bus.
You must take the bus line 63 to Neu-Anspach or Wehrheim, then the TSB/Taunusbahn (Taunus train) to Bad Homburg/Friedrichsdorf and finally the S5/Stadtschnellbahn 5 (city train line 5) to Frankfurt Hauptwache, that is literally the heart of the city.
The Goethe House is then really a five minute walk from there.
Have a nice time and enjoy the tour!
Carmen :)
