- Dobran OHannover, Germany6 contributionsAmazing galleries, disappointing shopThe exhibitions are really great, offering a comprehensive tour through the history of art from the 1400s onwards. The only complaint I have is regarding the shop. First, the collection of wall prints is disappointing, in contrast to all the beautiful paintings the museum has to offer. The wall prints are either of old exhibitions or of popular paintings, a few of paintings from the museum, but a lot of very popular paintings such as van Gogh's starry night and others like this - although the museum has no van gogh. Second, the shop is unapproachable if you're a foreign tourist who doesn't speak German, and you're looking for a book. The museum's shop has absolutely no book in English, unlike other art museums in Berlin, Munich, etc.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 January 2023
- Miki H11 contributionsExcellent experienceNot much to write about, this is a must for all art lovers visiting the city. Sometimes a bit difficult to orient, so I recommend to follow the direction indicators properly so not to miss anything. Thursday evening is half-price (open till 9pm), the shop well-equipped but incredibly expensive.Visited January 2023Written 23 January 2023
- buijsjThe Hague, The Netherlands62 contributionsThe museum you have to visit in HamburgA very good collection over a broad period, except for the recent modern period which is disappointing. Especially, visit the medieval, romantic, impressionist and first part of the 20th period (die Brücke, Blauwe Reiter). A huge collection, so take your time or make a choice which period you want to visit.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 April 2023

- JavaMama58Denmark1,936 contributionsConfusing MazeA disappointing series of rooms. The yellow dots were not much help. I recommend directional arrows. There were a few masters on display. The signs were difficult to read beyond the lines that are marked as a boundary. We missed some of the rooms. The modern art and sculpture were my least liked and some head scratchers. The Donations wing also uninteresting. The coffee shop and gift shop were the more interesting rooms.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 December 2023

One of the most ‘meh’ galleries I’ve ever been to. Entry is expensive (€16) so I had high hopes, esp as the painted mezzanine area at the top of the entrance stairs is impressive.
Things took a turn for the worse as soon as I entered the first gallery room, where I was immediately accosted by a staff member. My crime? I had my coat slung over my arm instead of tied around my waist. Nope - I’m not making this up - I saw another person told off for committing this same outrage. Petty and pathetic.
So onto the galleries. I started with the older work. Unimpressed tbh. Mostly dull landscapes. There were a few interesting medieval/renaissance religious paintings though nothing spectacular. They make a huge deal about hosting Caspar David Friedrich’s famous work “Wanderer above the Sea of Fog” however it was on loan at the time of my visit🙄
Went downstairs to the modern art section hoping to redeem the visit with some interesting 20th century works, but nope - just conceptual art installation nonsense.
Overall, disappointing and not worth the money. Also the gallery is incredibly badly laid out and confusing to navigate. Multiple dead ends and poor signage.

Lots of excellent art, largely European. Well displayed and lit. The gallery explanations are good and in both German and English.
The only negative is the main tour in the app is rather jumbled, leaving you scroll through to see what's featured, then recognize and pull up the work as you come across it in a gallery. The narratives themselves are quite informative.
That's a shame as the galleries are laid out in a fairly logical historical way, allowing you to really understand how movements and styles evolved. I ended up accessing commentary by number, rather than using the tour.

We visited the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, and was overwhelmed by all the wonderful art they had. It’s an enormous collection, of very important and beautiful art works, from the last 600 years of European history. There is also very fine contemporary German/European art collection with for instance Gerhard Richter.
I found the old art most interesting, but I guess all is wonderful, and I wish I had more time on my hands.
This is in fact a must see museum, maybe a notch below Gemälde gallerie in Berlin, but still very, very good!!

A great art museum with older and more contemporary collections. I was in Hamburg for 2 days and would highly recommend going if you have time.

Hallo

Hi I'm staying at the Marriott hotel can I walk to museum from there? Can I purchase a ticket when I get there?

Walkable distance from Marriott Hotel near Gansemarkt area. Around 20 minutes. From Marriott, walk two short streets down to Grosse Bleichen and stay on Grosse Bleichen all the way towards the lake (Binnenalster). facing the lake, turn right on Jungfernstieg and then turn Left on Ballindam -- the boulevard along the lake there. Walk for around 5 minutes along the lake shore and you get the Lombardsbrucke Bridge. The museum is there nearby, at the corner of Ballindamm and Glockengiesserwall. There are signs to guide like everywhere else in the city to city attractions. It is easy to get around that area. Nearby around five minutes away from the museum is the Central train station.
Can we let our luggages some where in the museum du ring the visit ?

Ther are free lockers, but aren't too big.
I just tried to purchase a ticket for admission on August 20th, on the Hamburger Kunsthalle website, but it doesn't seem to let me do it. Can I pay with an American VISA card?
Is it possible to purchase a ticket to the Art Museum in advance on your website? I'll be traveling to Hamburg from Greensboro, North Carolina, in the USA, on August 19th, and would like to visit the Hamburger Kunsthalle on Saturday, August 20th.

We walked to the museum along the lake on the same side. Across the lake, we saw several restaurants bordering it and later ate in one which was excellent. I hope that this is useful information.
